Series background & context
Colony Mars starts with a simple, chilling question: what really happened to the first privately funded human settlement on the Red Planet. During a long sandstorm all contact is lost, and satellite images suggest the base has been ripped apart, leaving its fifty four colonists presumed dead.
Three years later a new mission lands to investigate, bringing along biologist Dr Jann Malbec. In Colony One Mars she discovers that someone at the heart of the project turned the colony into a covert genetic research lab, using unwitting settlers as test subjects. As a mysterious illness strikes the crew, Jann has to uncover the truth while wondering if the safest choice is to keep that research as far from Earth as possible.
Colony Two Mars and Colony Three Mars follow on from that revelation. Stranded far from home, facing harsh conditions and dwindling support, Jann and the surviving colonists must deal with fresh arrivals from Earth who see Mars mainly as a treasure trove of data and biological weapons. The clash between corporate ambition and basic survival turns the remote outpost into the front line of a much larger fight.
Later books shift the focus to a more established Mars, centred on Jezero City and a population that now numbers in the hundreds of thousands. In Jezero City: Colony Four Mars Jann investigates a suspicious death just before a major terraforming experiment, recruiting ex cop Mia Sorelli and the acerbic droid Gizmo when official channels are blocked.
In Surface Tension: Colony Five Mars Mia has become a major in Mars Law and Order, trying to hold a fraying society together during the most intense dust storm in the planet's history. Her trip to the industrial city of Syrtis to look into a colleague's death pulls her into a conspiracy that uses the storm as cover for something far worse.
With Plains of Utopia Mars Colony 6 the series dives into questions of ideology and identity. Jann and Mia investigate a reclusive leader, Xenon Hybrid, and a movement that has built an isolated commune in the far north. Cloning, political manipulation, and the lure of a supposedly simpler life all collide as they uncover how far some followers will go in the name of their chosen future.
Shorter works like Gizmo Origin and Winds of Mars round out the setting, showing the improvised birth of the semi sentient droid who becomes a fan favourite and offering brief, ground level views of everyday life amid storms and shifting loyalties.
Taken together, Colony Mars mixes hard science, medical and genetic speculation, and a lot of human messiness. It is as interested in strained friendships, flawed leaders, and reluctant heroes as it is in habitats, dust storms, and launch windows, all under the constant question of whether dangerous new technology should ever be allowed back to Earth.
