Series background & context
Cold Creek is Karen Harper writing contemporary romantic suspense with family trauma right at the center. The series follows the Lockwood sisters, women still living with the damage from a childhood abduction that tore their family apart. That shared past gives the trilogy a strong emotional spine, because every new case also pokes at something old.
Shattered Secrets begins with Tess Lockwood's return to Cold Creek, Ohio. She barely remembers the crime that changed her life, but the town remembers it for her. When another child disappears, the book stops being just about memory and becomes a race against repetition. Sheriff Gabe McCord adds both romance and guilt, since he has long blamed himself for what happened years before.
The second book, Forbidden Ground, shifts to Kate Lockwood. She is an anthropologist, and Harper smartly uses that profession to open up another layer of the region's history. A burial mound, local resistance, attraction to Grant Mason, and a fresh death turn the story into more than a simple reunion novel. The past keeps turning up in physical form, not just emotional form.
Then Broken Bonds brings in older sister Char, a social worker used to complicated situations. By this point Cold Creek is changing, growing, and attracting the kind of conflict that comes with money and development. Char quickly senses that something in town is being covered up, and Harper uses her outsider-insider status to good effect. She belongs to the place, but she can still see what others would rather ignore.
The series works because it does not treat trauma as a one-book issue. Each sister gets her own story, but the damage echoes across all three books. Harper combines that ongoing hurt with fast-moving cases, small-town pressure, and romances that have to grow in the middle of unresolved fear.
If you like suspense series where the family arc matters as much as the mystery, Cold Creek is one of her stronger modern sets. It is personal, readable, and grounded in the idea that some towns never quite bury what happened there.
