Series background & context
The Clipped Wings series is Helena Hunting's tattoo‑studio world, set in a corner of Chicago where a used bookshop sits across from Inked Armor, a busy, close-knit tattoo shop.
At the center of the main duet are Tenley Page, a graduate student starting over after a devastating loss, and Hayden Stryker, the tattooist whose carefully curated ink and piercings hide his own haunted past. When Tenley walks into Inked Armor with an intricate back piece that clearly means more than simple body art, they both recognize a kind of familiar damage in the other.
Across Cupcakes and Ink, Clipped Wings, and Inked Armor, their relationship moves from wary fascination to something raw, physical, and deeply emotional. Nightmares, guilt, and trauma follow them into every chapter, and a lot of the tension comes from whether they can let someone else in without losing the fragile control they've built.
These books are heavy on ink, chemistry, and the slow, sometimes painful work of putting a life back together.
Around Tenley and Hayden is the Inked Armor crew, the found family that gives the series its warmth. Chris Zelter, one of the shop's artists, takes a bigger role in the novellas and in Fractures in Ink, where his on‑again, off‑again connection with grad‑student‑turned‑strip‑club‑waitress Sarah becomes its own full‑length story. Their arc digs into self‑worth, bad choices, and the way one good person can become a lifeline when everything else feels unstable.
The shorter pieces—Between the Cracks and Cracks in the Armor—fill in the spaces between the main novels. They follow Chris on a late‑night rescue mission for Hayden, and later show how his insistence on protecting everyone around him makes it hard to accept that someone might actually choose him back.
Overall, this is the grittier corner of Hunting's universe. Expect piercings, detailed tattoo sessions, strip‑club shifts, and characters who swear a lot and cope badly before they learn to cope better. But it's also about loyalty: the way a tiny circle of people can become home, and the way falling in love can finally make it safe to put the past in ink instead of letting it keep running your life.
