Author bio

Clair M Poulson grew up in Duchesne, Utah, the son of a rancher and farmer and a mother who worked as a librarian. From the time he was little, books, horses, and open country were simply part of everyday life.

As a boy he was an avid reader, and later, a father who loved making up stories for his children and grandchildren. That mix of imagination and everyday experience became the foundation for the suspense novels he would eventually write.

Before he was a full-time writer, Poulson spent roughly forty years working in the criminal justice system. He served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman, worked with the Utah Highway Patrol, became a deputy and then sheriff of Duchesne County, and later transitioned to service as a justice court judge.

Across those decades he sat on a range of local, state, and federal boards dealing with courts, juvenile justice, and law-enforcement standards. That long view of how cases unfold—from roadside stop to courtroom—shows up all over his fiction, in the way small decisions ripple into big consequences.

Poulson didn’t publish his first novel, Point of Impact, until 1988, but once he started he kept going. Over the years he has written more than forty books, from youth adventures to adult suspense, many of them set in the rural Utah landscapes he knows best.

Readers often discover him through fast-paced, faith-friendly thrillers like I’ll Find You, Blind Side, Evidence, and Don’t Cry Wolf, where ordinary people are pulled into kidnappings, murder cases, and manhunts that test both courage and conscience. More recent novels such as Hunted, Deadly Inheritance, and Getting Even continue that pattern of high stakes wrapped in clean, accessible storytelling.

Alongside the adult suspense, he has written for younger readers as well. The Samuel Adventure books drop teenage heroes into Book of Mormon–era battles, while standalones like Lucky Come Home, Dark Shadows in the Forest, and Disruption mix adventure, family loyalty, and a touch of the fantastic.

Across all of his work, a few themes keep showing up: small towns where everyone is connected, people trying to do the right thing under pressure, and justice that doesn’t always come easily. Violence stays on the page but is never graphic, and characters’ religious lives are present without turning the stories into sermons.

Outside of writing and judging, Poulson has continued to ranch and farm, raising horses and cattle and helping to run a family grocery store. He and his wife, Ruth, whom he met at Snow College, live in Duchesne; they have five children and a growing number of grandchildren.

He is also active in his Latter-day Saint congregation, having served over the years as a missionary, bishop, counselor, scoutmaster, and Sunday School teacher. For many readers, that mix of lawman, rancher, church member, and storyteller is exactly what gives his novels their steady, grounded feel.
