City of Orphans / Bogle Books in Order

Former pickpocket Jem becomes apprentice to Alfred, a hunter of child-eating bogles in Victorian London. As more orphans disappear, Jem and Birdie help wage a dangerous underground campaign while the mysteries of the monsters challenge emerging scientific explanations.

Ten-year-old orphan Birdie earns her living singing to lure child-eating monsters from hiding while Alfred the Bogler kills them. When London’s orphans begin vanishing, their dangerous trade leads into a mystery threatening children beyond the usual risks of the streets.

Ned joins Alfred’s monster-hunting team as bogles continue threatening Victorian London. New machinery and public skepticism jeopardize the profession, while an old enemy returns with a danger that may outstrip the creatures Ned has learned to lure.
