Chronicles of the Avatar Books in Order

The Chronicles of the Avatar novels step away from Aang and Korra to explore the lives of earlier Avatars. Each story goes back into the history of the Four Nations and asks what the Avatar’s job looked like in a different time, with different politics, cultures, and dangers.

The first book in this reading path is The Rise of Kyoshi by F. C. Yee. Kyoshi is remembered in later Avatar stories as a fearsome, long-lived Avatar, but this novel begins before she fully understands who she is or what she can do.

She grows up with very little security and works in the household of Yun, a young man believed to be the Avatar. When events reveal that the world’s assumptions may be wrong, Kyoshi is pulled into a dangerous search for training, allies, and a way to survive people who would rather control the Avatar than help her.

Kyoshi’s story is more intense than Aang’s early adventures. The Earth Kingdom is politically fragmented, powerful groups compete for influence, and travel can be dangerous even before the larger threat becomes clear. Kyoshi has to learn whom she can trust while carrying a responsibility she never asked for.

It is an origin story with teeth.

The novel also introduces readers to Rangi, a Fire Nation soldier and Kyoshi’s closest companion, as well as a wider cast of teachers, fighters, criminals, and political figures. Their relationships give the book its emotional center, especially as Kyoshi learns that doing the right thing can involve painful choices.

Michael Dante DiMartino is a co-creator of the Avatar world, while the Kyoshi novel itself is written by F. C. Yee. The book expands the setting without requiring readers to know every comic or episode first, though fans will enjoy seeing earlier versions of ideas that echo through the franchise.
