Series background & context

The Chronicles of Deryni trilogy is where Katherine Kurtz’s long running saga first appeared in print, and it remains the best known doorway into the Eleven Kingdoms. These books introduce King Kelson Haldane, the Deryni duke Alaric Morgan, and priest Duncan McLain as they navigate a kingdom on the edge of religious and political rupture.

Set in Gwynedd, a land modelled on twelfth century Britain, the Chronicles follow a young heir who must secure his throne in a realm that fears magic. The Deryni, a minority with inherent psychic and magical gifts, were once rulers, but centuries of persecution have driven most of them underground. Kelson’s closest ally, Morgan, is openly half Deryni, and Duncan hides the same heritage under priestly robes.

In Deryni Rising, the sudden death of King Brion throws the realm into crisis. Kelson must be crowned while a rival sorceress plots to seize the throne at his coronation. To survive, he needs to awaken the latent Haldane powers that let his mortal line wield Deryni like abilities. The story unfolds in court chambers, cathedrals, and narrow castle corridors rather than distant quest lands, with rituals and duels that feel as formal as any state ceremony.

Deryni Checkmate and High Deryni widen the lens. Church leaders, scandalised by open displays of magic, move to excommunicate Morgan and Duncan and strip Kelson’s realm of spiritual legitimacy. At the same time, a fanatic leading peasant uprisings and a neighbouring Deryni king test the young monarch from opposite sides. Councils of bishops, rebel camps, and border battlefields all matter as much as the private bonds between the three central men.

One of the strengths of this sequence is its balance between large scale conflict and small, personal costs. Kelson’s decisions about mercy, justice, and who to trust carry obvious political weight, but they also reverberate through friendships and family ties. Jehana, his devout mother, embodies the Church’s suspicion of Deryni even as her son depends on them.

In the wider publication order, the Chronicles sit in the middle of the Deryni shelf, with prequel trilogies that explain how the Haldane line was restored and darker later volumes that trace the long aftermath of persecution. This page shows you where the original trilogy lives in that web of stories, so you can either start here and read outward, or circle back after seeing how Saint Camber and his heirs reshaped Gwynedd.
