Christmas at the Winter Palace is a two-part historical fiction collection set in imperial Russia during the eras of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna and Catherine the Great. It follows Alyona Arkadyevna, a young woman whose hopes for a glittering life at court are repeatedly tested by the realities behind palace doors.

The story begins with A Lady of the Court. Alyona leaves her sheltered life in Kazan after her father agrees to take her to St. Petersburg for the summer season. She has pictured the capital as a place of romance, beauty, and possibility. Then a devastating change overturns the future she expected, and Empress Elizabeth summons Alyona to live at court as her ward.

That invitation gives Alyona access to a world most people only glimpse from a distance. It also puts her in the middle of a place shaped by rank, appearances, and power. The palaces are lavish, the courtiers are polished, and Alyona soon learns that surface charm does not always mean safety or kindness.

The second novella, The Christmas Gift, continues Alyona’s story after she enters an arranged marriage with the older Count Lev Petrovich Vorontsov. Alyona wants a loving home and family life on their estate. Lev is focused on securing a son and heir. When the children they expect do not arrive, the marriage must carry the weight of disappointment, duty, and very different dreams.

The court is only the beginning.

Across both books, Alyona is trying to find a place where she can live with purpose instead of simply following the role others have chosen for her. The series balances courtly settings and historical detail with close personal questions about belonging, marriage, contentment, and hope. Its tension comes less from battlefield action than from the daily risks of life near power and the private cost of public expectations.

Read A Lady of the Court first. It establishes Alyona’s family, her arrival in St. Petersburg, and the event that changes the direction of her life. The Christmas Gift works best immediately after it, since it follows the next stage of her journey. Together, the novellas offer one continuous coming-of-age story set against the spectacle and strain of the Russian imperial court.
