Author bio

Christine Valters Paintner grew up in New York City, where one of her favorite places was The Cloisters in upper Manhattan. Its stone arches, garden, tapestries, and view of the Hudson caught her imagination long before she understood much about monastic life. The visual richness of that place stayed with her.

Her spiritual roots are Catholic, with a lasting interest in the sacramental, the mystical, and the call to justice. She earned a BA in Philosophy from Fordham University, an MA in Systematic Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology, and a PhD in Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union.

Graduate study led her to Hildegard of Bingen.

Paintner was drawn to Hildegard’s music, poems, wide-ranging curiosity, and monastic life. That interest opened a path into Benedictine spirituality, and she became a Benedictine oblate, a person committed to carrying monastic values into ordinary life rather than living in a monastery.

Her work brings together several strands that can seem separate at first: Christian contemplation, expressive arts, dream work, movement, poetry, photography, and attention to the natural world. She writes for people who want spiritual practice to meet them in daily routines, creative work, grief, uncertainty, and changing seasons. The questions are often practical: How do we slow down? How do we listen? What might the body, the land, or a small image be trying to tell us?

In 2006, Paintner founded Abbey of the Arts, a virtual monastery and global community centered on contemplative practice and creative expression. Her books grew from the same work she has done as a spiritual director, teacher, retreat leader, and pilgrimage guide. She often returns to the wisdom of desert, Celtic, and Benedictine traditions, but makes room for drawing, walking, journaling, breath, music, and silence.

The monk and the artist both have a place here.

Books such as The Artist’s Rule, Eyes of the Heart, and The Soul of a Pilgrim offer structured invitations for readers who want to connect creativity with prayer. The Artist’s Rule uses Benedictine rhythms to support a creative life, while Eyes of the Heart treats photography as a practice of sacred seeing. In The Soul of a Pilgrim, outer travel becomes a way of thinking about the inner journey, with practices for thresholds, uncertainty, and beginning again.

Her later work widens the frame. Earth, Our Original Monastery invites readers to find spiritual companionship in the more-than-human world, and The Wisdom of the Body explores embodiment, especially for women, through reflection and creative practice. Her poetry collections, including Dreaming of Stones and The Wisdom of Wild Grace, draw on Irish landscapes, animals, saints, memory, and the slow work of paying attention.

In 2012, she and her husband, John Valters Paintner, sold their Seattle home and most of their belongings to live overseas. They spent six months in Vienna, a city connected to her family history, before moving to Galway on Ireland’s west coast. They continue to lead Abbey of the Arts together, offering retreats, prayer services, online programs, and pilgrimages.

These days, Paintner’s writing still comes back to a simple conviction: spiritual life happens in the life already in front of us. That can mean washing dishes, taking a walk by the sea, tending a creative practice, or sitting quietly long enough to notice what is there.
