Author bio

Christina Skye, born Roberta Helmer in Dayton, Ohio, came to fiction after a first career that already sounded a little improbable. She studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Ohio State University, earned a doctorate in classical Chinese literature, and spent years working as a writer, translator, and consultant. Much of that time was spent in Asia, and that mix of travel, language, and history stayed with her for the rest of her writing life.

Then she changed lanes.

Before romance readers knew her as Christina Skye, Helmer wrote nonfiction about Chinese culture, crafts, and puppetry. She interviewed artists, tracked down old techniques, and turned deep research into accessible books. That habit of looking closely never left her. When she moved into fiction, it showed up in the old legends, unusual settings, and the sense that her characters were always brushing up against history.

In 1990, she sold her first romance novel in six days. That quick start opened the door to a long, busy career that eventually included more than thirty novels, several novellas, and a handful of nonfiction books. She wrote across historical romance, contemporary romance, paranormal romance, and romantic suspense, but the through line stayed pretty clear: smart women, dangerous men, strong chemistry, and plots that never sat still for long.

Research mattered.

Many readers first meet her through the Draycott Abbey books, beginning with Hour of the Rose. Those novels blend haunted houses, Scottish legends, suspense, and love stories that seem to echo across centuries. Other readers head straight for the faster, lighter romantic suspense of books like My Spy, Hot Pursuit, and Code Name: Nanny, where Navy SEALs, undercover missions, and near-disasters come with a healthy dose of heat and humor. And then there is her warmer contemporary side in books like A Home by the Sea and The Accidental Bride, where friendship, recovery, and second chances carry just as much weight as the romance.

She also kept a sense of fun in the work. Even when the plot involved stolen art, ancient curses, kidnappings, or secret operations, there was usually a playful streak running underneath. Readers who click with Skye tend to come back for exactly that balance. The books can get wild, but they rarely lose their warmth.

Under both her own name and her pen name, she built a broad body of work. Her novels appeared on bestseller lists, and titles in the Code Name line, including Code Name: Baby and Code Name: Princess, picked up book club attention. Later in her career, The Accidental Bride also drew special praise from reviewers, proof that she could still surprise readers after decades on the page.

Away from the desk, she was known for still writing longhand. She loved knitting, sewing, tea, travel, and collecting odd historical details she could tuck into a story later. She lived in Arizona, on the western slopes of the McDowell Mountains, and seemed to keep the same curious, slightly amused eye on the world that readers found in her fiction.

Helmer died on May 21, 2018, in Buckeye, Arizona. But Christina Skye's books still feel lively and very much themselves. They carry the stamp of a writer who knew her history, enjoyed a little danger, and understood that romance works best when the people at the center of it have something real to fight for.
