Author bio
Chris Cannon writes about dragons, first love, and the kind of magical trouble that can wreck a perfectly ordinary week.
She is from Southern Illinois, and she still lives there with her husband and several furry beasts. By day, she works as a speech therapist. By night, she writes, usually with coffee close at hand.
That split, practical day job and imaginative night work, fits her books well.
Cannon has said she loves writing about teenagers because high school is where people are still figuring out who they are, and every choice feels huge. First love can be exciting, awkward, public, and a little terrifying, which is exactly the kind of emotional weather she likes to write in. That helps explain why so many of her stories mix humor with real nerves, crushes with chaos, and ordinary school life with something much stranger waiting around the corner.
Her best-known books are the dragon-centered Going Down in Flames novels, which begin with Bryn discovering on her sixteenth birthday that she belongs to a hidden society of shape-shifting dragons. Those books blend school drama, forbidden romance, clan politics, and genuine danger. Readers who like magical worlds with strict rules, strong feelings, and a heroine who never quite fits the mold often start there.
She later returned to that world with Star-Crossed Dragons, a romance-focused prequel about Bryn's parents, Sara and Ian. It shows another side of Cannon's storytelling. The series can do action and rebellion, but it also has room for tender, stubborn love stories.
Her contemporary romances lean into the funny, awkward side of teen life.
In books like Blackmail Boyfriend, The Boyfriend Bet, Boomerang Boyfriend, The Dating Debate, and 99% Faking It, she plays with fake dating, bets, secret crushes, best friend's brother tension, and the fear of being someone's second choice. The tone is sweet and snarky, but the emotional stakes are still real. People want to be chosen, understood, and taken seriously.
Then she takes that same interest in outsiders and drops it into paranormal trouble.
Demon Bound moves into a small-town world of demons, witches, and vampires, while Murder in Mystic Hills turns toward paranormal cozy mystery with an inherited tearoom, a murder, and a talking cat. Across all of these books, Cannon keeps returning to a few things: characters who feel out of step with the world around them, hidden communities with their own rules, and love stories shaped by trust, identity, and the question of where someone truly belongs.
So even though her shelves include dragons, romantic comedy, and mystery, the books feel connected. They are fast, warm, a little mischievous, and usually centered on people trying to make sense of a world that just got much more complicated. These days, she is still writing from Southern Illinois, still balancing work and storytelling, and, if her author notes are any guide, still very loyal to coffee.
