Series background & context

Chicago Crew is Sapphire Knight's mafia romance series set around an organized-crime crew in Chicago. The books, Gangster and Mad Max, put romance beside crew politics, violence, betrayal, and the hard choices that come with a life built on loyalty.

Gangster introduces a feared man known as the Joker. He has a reputation for taking what he wants and keeping his emotions locked down, until a strong-willed woman refuses to become another possession. Their connection becomes even more dangerous when a hit puts her directly in the line of fire.

Love is a liability in this world.

Mad Max returns to the crew with a marriage of convenience that is supposed to serve a political purpose. Max needs his wife for a crucial vote, but the arrangement becomes personal as an uprising, divided loyalties, and old betrayals close in. The book keeps the focus on how private desire and crew duty can pull in opposite directions.

Chicago matters here. It is not just a backdrop but the place where the crew's reputation, territory, and enemies shape every decision. The characters cannot easily walk away from the people who raised them or the obligations attached to their names.

Readers can expect possessive heroes, women who push back, crime-family tension, and high emotional stakes. Start with Gangster for the first look at the crew and its rules, then move to Mad Max for another romance inside the same dangerous world. Each book has its own central couple, but reading in order gives the best sense of the Chicago Crew's connections and conflicts.
