Author bio
Charmaine Pauls was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. She studied Communication at the University of Potchefstroom and spent years working across journalism, public relations, advertising, photography, graphic design, and brand marketing. Long before she published fiction, writing was already stitched into her everyday work.
The shift toward novels came after she relocated to Chile with her French husband. She has said that the move gave her the space to write creatively full-time, and she began publishing fiction in 2011. Before the darker romance books many readers know now, she also wrote short stories and articles, and two of her short pieces were selected for an African anthology.
That mix of jobs shows up in the books.
Her stories often feel written by someone who notices how people perform for each other, how power moves through a room, and how much can be hidden under polish. South Africa appears often in her work, especially in books like Dubious and Beauty in the Broken, where crime, money, social pressure, and raw survival matter just as much as the romance.
If you start with Dubious and Consent, you get a strong sense of her signature dark lane: hard bargains, dangerous men, and heroines trying to keep their footing under impossible pressure. Beauty in the Broken brings that same intensity into the diamond world, while Old Enough and Young Enough show that she can take a taboo, character-driven setup and make it feel just as tense.
Her earlier standalones also show more range than her current reputation might suggest. Between Yesterday and Tomorrow leans into family mystery and a French setting, The Winemaker folds romance into life at a Chilean vineyard with a paranormal edge, and Catch Me Twice turns toward second-chance angst. Even when the tone shifts, she keeps returning to bruised people, messy history, and the question of whether love can survive bad timing or worse decisions.
She also moves comfortably outside straight contemporary dark romance.
In her Krinar books, The Krinar Experiment and The Krinar’s Informant, she writes alien romance with the same taste for power imbalance and obsession. Her collaborations with Anna Zaires, including White Nights, Darker Than Love, and Dark Prince’s Captive, push that further, moving from Russian underworld glamour to portal fantasy while keeping the pressure-cooker feel intact.
Across the bibliography, certain things keep resurfacing: South African settings, criminal worlds, damaged families, possessive heroes, and women who are cornered but not passive. Even when the setup gets wild, a loan shark's bargain, an oligarch's pursuit, an alien invasion, the emotional hook is usually very human. Readers may come for the darkness, but they stay because the characters are always negotiating dignity, fear, hunger, and choice.
These days Pauls lives in the south of France with her family. She has shared that home includes a lively mix of languages, plus a dog and a very opinionated cat. When she is not writing, she bakes cakes and lifts weights, which feels like a pretty practical balance for someone who spends so much time creating beautiful trouble on the page.
