The Charlie Waldo series follows a former Los Angeles police detective who has made a strange, strict life for himself after a case went terribly wrong. Charlie Waldo has left the city for a small place in the woods, cut down his possessions to one hundred items, and tried to reduce his impact on the world as much as possible. Then murder investigations keep pulling him back.

Waldo would rather disappear than investigate another crime.

His main connection to the working world is Lorena Nascimento, his former girlfriend and a licensed private investigator. Their relationship is warm, combative, and never especially simple. Lorena knows Waldo is an unusually good detective, even when his rules about consumer waste, travel, and possessions make every job harder than it needs to be. Together, they take on clients who often bring money, status, and trouble in equal measure.

The first novel, Last Looks, sends Waldo into a Hollywood murder case involving a difficult television actor whose wife has been killed. In Below the Line, he and Lorena are drawn into the shifting stories around Stevie Rose, a wealthy Los Angeles teenager who disappears after a teacher's murder. Pay or Play gives Waldo two demanding cases at once, including blackmail aimed at TV courtroom star Judge Ida Mudge and the death of a vagrant. The short story Carbuncle's Breakfast offers a smaller, stranger case when a pampered Hollywood dog produces a valuable diamond.

The cases move through Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Orange County, places where polished public images often hide lies, grudges, and private deals. Gould uses the entertainment business as a source of comedy and tension, but the mysteries still matter. Waldo's past guilt gives his work an extra edge. He is not looking for a new career or a glamorous life. He is trying, often awkwardly, to do right by people when the system has failed them.

These are fast-moving private-eye mysteries with a dry, offbeat sense of humor. Expect eccentric clients, show-business egos, crooked figures, old enemies, and cases that become more complicated the longer Waldo looks at them. Waldo's minimalist lifestyle is part of the fun, but it also keeps raising the same question: can someone truly make up for a past mistake by punishing himself forever?

The series began with Last Looks, which Gould later adapted for film. New readers will get the fullest picture of Waldo and Lorena by starting there, though each case has its own central mystery.
