Charlie Henry Books in Order

The Charlie Henry books move away from the reservation setting that defines so much of the Thurlos' fiction and head into Albuquerque. But the same interest in loyalty, danger, and people carrying old scars is still very much present.

Charlie Henry and Gordon Sweeney are war veterans trying to build an ordinary life by running a pawnshop. That ordinary life does not last long. A pawnshop is the sort of place where everybody brings in a story, and some of those stories arrive carrying stolen property, bad blood, or a gun.

This series likes motion.

Charlie is Navajo, Gordon is his closest friend and business partner, and the bond between them gives the books a strong backbone. They are not drawing-room sleuths. They are practical men who know how to think under pressure, improvise, and keep moving when violence breaks out. Their military background matters, but these books are not about glory. They are about what that training looks like once someone is back home and trying to live a civilian life.

The co-written Aimee Thurlo books in the series, The Pawnbroker and Grave Consequences, set the tone well. One starts with the murder of the former shop owner. The next turns a striking piece of Navajo jewelry into the entry point for a bigger criminal network. In both, the mysteries feel urban, fast, and a little rough around the edges in a good way.

There is also a nice supporting cast around Charlie and Gordon, including friends in law enforcement and the legal world, so the books never feel closed off from the city around them. If you want a Southwestern mystery with more buddy energy, more action, and less procedural formality than Ella Clah, Charlie Henry is a good place to go.
