Charlie Fletcher Books in Order

Charlie Fletcher is a Scottish novelist and screenwriter whose stories often begin when the ordinary world slips sideways. A London statue moves. A hospital room opens onto a world of old adventure tales. A quiet island becomes the starting point for a dangerous journey.

He studied literature at the University of St Andrews, then started out in film and television. Fletcher worked as a film editor at the BBC, on programmes including news, drama, and arts coverage, before heading to Los Angeles to study screenwriting at the University of Southern California.

That screenwriting training led to years of work in the United States. He wrote for film and television, and his credits include work connected with Fair Game, Mean Machine, Taggart, Afterlife, and Wire in the Blood.

It was a useful education in keeping a story moving.

Fletcher's first novel for younger readers was Stoneheart. Set in present-day London, it follows George Chapman after he accidentally wakes the city's statues, gargoyles, and carved creatures. The book grew into the Stoneheart trilogy, continued in Ironhand and Silvertongue. Readers who enjoy hidden layers of familiar cities, fast chases, and friendship under pressure will find a lot to like there.

He returned to that London in the Dragon Shield books, beginning with Dragon Shield. This trilogy follows siblings Will and Jo Carter when time stops across the city and living statues become both allies and threats. Fletcher makes museums, monuments, and street corners feel like places where something might be watching back.

His standalone Far Rockaway moves to Manhattan, where Cat Manno is injured alongside her grandfather and enters a story-world shaped by the adventure books he read to her. It is a quest story with pirates, danger, family ties, and a heroine who has no intention of waiting around to be rescued.

Then Fletcher began writing adult fiction too.

The Oversight trilogy, made up of The Oversight, The Paradox, and The Remnant, takes readers to an alternate Victorian London. Its last magical guardians try to hold the line between the natural and supernatural worlds while their own old conflicts catch up with them. The books have darker stakes, but they keep Fletcher's interest in secret cities, unlikely allies, and characters forced to make hard choices.

Writing as C. A. Fletcher, he later published A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World, a post-apocalyptic journey about Griz pursuing the thief who has taken his dog. It is a survival story, but its real center is loyalty, family, and the fierce bond between a person and an animal.

Fletcher lives on the edge of Edinburgh with his family. Away from the desk, he has said he enjoys swimming, forgotten books, terriers, and summers in the Outer Hebrides. Those interests fit his fiction rather well, which is full of strange corners, rough weather, and journeys that ask people to keep going.
