Charlemagne's Cross Books in Order

In ninth-century Denmark, Sven struggles to protect his grandson Charles while reclaiming his responsibilities as jarl. An alliance with a challenger to the throne draws him into battle, leaving Charles exposed to religious tensions and dangerous schemes at home.

After his father is murdered, nine-year-old Charles flees Francia carrying a mysterious package and instructions to find his grandfather. The embittered Viking he discovers must help him uncover why powerful kings want the boy dead.

With Denmark’s throne empty and rival jarls fighting for power, Sven returns to find his home sacked and his grandson kidnapped. The arrival of Charles’s mother complicates his search as enemies pursue both the boy and Charlemagne’s cross.

King Louis holds Charles captive and forces Sven to raid West Francia as the price of his grandson’s survival. While Charles confronts a disappointing reunion with his mother, Sven must choose how much innocent blood he will spill to rescue him.
