Author bio
Charity Blackstock was one of several names used by Ursula Joyce Torday, a British novelist who moved easily between mystery, gothic suspense, historical romance, and stories shaped by war and displacement. Born in London on February 19, 1912, she was the only child of the Hungarian anthropologist Emil Torday and Caia Rose Macdonell, who was Scottish.
She went to Kensington High School, studied English at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, and later earned a Social Science Certificate at the London School of Economics. Before her many pen names became familiar to readers, she published three novels under Ursula Torday in the 1930s, beginning with The Ballad-Maker of Paris in 1935.
Then the war interrupted that early career.
During the Second World War, Torday worked as a probation officer with the Citizens Advice Bureau. In the years that followed, she ran a refugee scheme for Jewish children, an experience that stayed with her and found its way into later work. Her novel The Briar Patch brings together a young Englishwoman and a Jewish survivor in postwar France, while The Children, published under another title in the United States, drew on her work helping children who had survived the Holocaust.
She also worked as a typist at London's National Central Library and taught English to adults. That library job gave her a wonderfully specific setting for Dewey Death, a mystery set among the staff of an inter-library dispatch office, where professional rivalries turn lethal.
In the early 1950s, Torday returned to publishing with a new set of identities. As Paula Allardyce, Charity Blackstock, Lee Blackstock, and Charlotte Keppel, she wrote dozens of standalone novels. The names sometimes shifted between British and American editions, so the same book can turn up with a different title or byline. That can make browsing her backlist feel a little like solving one of her mysteries.
Her books often put ordinary or vulnerable people in places where the past has not stayed buried. In The Woman in the Woods, a skeleton found outside a small town opens an intricate local mystery. Monkey on a Chain follows a woman trying to understand her twin brother's wartime death. A House Possessed turns a Scottish Highlands boarding house, a ghost, and a valuable necklace into a gothic trap.
Romance is never far away, but it usually comes with complications. My Dear Miss Emma sends an impoverished Englishwoman to eighteenth-century France as a governess. Witches' Sabbath places writer Tamar Brown in an English village still haunted by an old witch trial and by a painful former love. The latter won the Romantic Novel of the Year award in 1961.
Her characters do not always arrive polished or powerful. They are often outsiders, workers, young women with limited choices, or people forced to question what they thought they knew. That grounded approach also gave her historical novels a little more edge than their elegant settings might suggest.
Torday published her final novel in 1982. She died in Haywards Heath, Sussex, on March 6, 1997, aged 85. Her books remain an appealing find for readers who like atmospheric settings, tangled relationships, and suspense that grows from secrets people would rather keep hidden.
