Author bio

Chanel Cleeton grew up in Florida in a Cuban American family shaped by stories of exile, return, and the life left behind. Her grandparents' memories of Cuba were not background noise, they were part of everyday life. She has said those family stories, along with the food, the nostalgia, and the sense that home could live in memory as much as geography, stayed with her from childhood.

She was drawn early to history and politics, which helps explain why even her most romantic books are interested in power, place, and the pressure families put on us. She studied in London, earning a bachelor's degree in International Relations from Richmond, The American International University in London, and later a master's in Global Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Living abroad widened her map.

Cleeton has also said she loves to travel, and she has lived in the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. That global experience runs through her work. Sometimes it shows up in obvious ways, like glamorous London settings and international characters. Sometimes it shows up more quietly, in the way her books pay attention to what it means to feel split between countries, families, and versions of yourself.

Law school was the turning point. She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law, but while she was there she realized she wanted to write novels instead of spending her life in a courtroom. It was a practical path on paper, but not the right one for her. Writing won.

Her early books, including I See London, Flirting with Scandal, and Fly with Me, are contemporary romances with lots of momentum. They move through elite campuses, Washington politics, and military life, and readers tend to come for the chemistry and stay for the emotional mess underneath. Even in those books, Cleeton is interested in ambition, class, loyalty, and the gap between public image and private feeling.

Then she turned toward the history that had been following her all along.

Next Year in Havana brought her family heritage, political interests, and love of sweeping romance together in one book. It became a Reese's Book Club pick and introduced many readers to the Perez family, whose stories continue through When We Left Cuba, The Last Train to Key West, The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba, and Our Last Days in Barcelona. These novels move across decades, but they keep circling the same big questions: what home means, what exile does to a family, and how women make choices when history crowds the room.

More recent books show how flexible her range can be. The Cuban Heiress turns a real 1934 sea disaster into a tense historical thriller. The House on Biscayne Bay leans into gothic suspense in old Miami. The Lost Story of Eva Fuentes builds a literary mystery across multiple timelines, and An Infinite Love Story heads into the 1960s Space Race. The genres shift, but the draw is familiar: vivid settings, hidden histories, and women trying to hold on to themselves when the stakes get personal.

What makes Cleeton easy to follow from book to book is that her interests stay steady even when the genre changes. She likes love stories, but she also likes secrets, family memory, political upheaval, and characters caught between duty and desire. She has spoken about loving travel and life near the water, and both keep resurfacing in her fiction. Her novels move from London to Havana to Miami and beyond, but they are all asking some version of the same question: where do we belong?
