Series background & context
The Celtic Brooch books are built around a simple, irresistible hook: an old brooch, a few Gaelic words, a rush of fog, and suddenly someone is in the wrong century. The series begins with The Ruby Brooch, where Kit MacKlenna learns her past may reach back to the Oregon Trail, and it widens from there into a long, connected saga of family secrets, love stories, rescue missions, and very bad timing in dangerous places.
This is very much a family story.
Even when a later book shifts to a new couple, the same circle of relatives and friends keeps showing up, helping with rescues, arguing over risks, and carrying the emotional fallout from one adventure into the next. The MacKlenna, Montgomery, Fraser, Mallory, and O’Grady connections matter a lot. Some entries, like The Last MacKlenna and The Broken Brooch, stay in the present and lean harder into romance, suspense, or murder investigation, but they still deepen the larger web of relationships.
The historical settings do a lot of the work, and they are not there just for decoration. One book may drop readers onto the Oregon Trail, another into the Civil War, another into the week before D-Day, and another into revolutionary Paris or the Battle of New Orleans. Later books head to Colorado mining country, the Dakota Badlands, Buffalo's 1901 Pan-American Exposition, and Prohibition-era Chicago. Each place brings its own pressures, from war and disease to political chaos, rough travel, and the real danger of being stranded far from home.
The tone shifts a little from book to book, which is part of the appeal. Some installments are full-on time-travel adventure, while others feel closer to romantic suspense or contemporary family drama. Logan tends to center practical people who have useful skills, doctors, soldiers, investigators, riders, artists, reporters, and then drops them into situations where those skills matter. Even when the cast gets large, the books stay focused on people who are wounded, stubborn, and easy to root for.
The stakes keep getting bigger.
What starts as one woman's search for identity turns into a series about protecting an extended clan, keeping the brooches out of the wrong hands, and deciding when history should be left alone. Rescue missions become common. So do hard tradeoffs, because getting one person home can put someone else in danger, and love is never the only thing on the line. It's best read in order if you want the full effect, since the real fun of Celtic Brooch is seeing how one trip through time echoes into the next.
