Author bio
Cecily von Ziegesar grew up shuttling between Connecticut and New York City, watching Manhattan from the train window long before she turned it into fiction. She was born in New York in 1970 and raised in a family with deep German roots and a lot of stories to tell.
As a kid she wanted to be a ballerina. She started lessons when she was tiny and even auditioned for the School of American Ballet, only to be turned down. That early brush with an elite world, and the feeling of being just outside it, would become very familiar material later on.
In high school she woke up at six every morning to commute into Manhattan for classes at the Nightingale Bamford School, a small, competitive girls’ school on the Upper East Side. Those long days, surrounded by old brownstones, uniforms, and unspoken rules about money and status, quietly stocked her imagination.
After graduating, von Ziegesar headed to Colby College, a liberal arts school in Maine. When she finished there she spent a year in Budapest, working for a local radio station and learning how to shape other people’s stories for an audience. Back in the United States she enrolled in a creative writing program at the University of Arizona, but left before finishing, more interested in writing than in staying in school.
She moved to New York and took a job at a book packaging company that specialized in creating series for young readers. Surrounded by pitches, outlines, and marketing plans, she started to wonder what a series drawn from her own school world might look like. Out of that mix came the idea for Gossip Girl: a sharp, funny look at wealthy Manhattan teenagers told through the eyes of an anonymous blogger.
The first Gossip Girl book came out in 2002 and quickly found a huge audience. The novels follow Serena van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Nate Archibald, Dan and Jenny Humphrey, and their orbit of friends and enemies as they move from prep school to college, all while their secrets are exposed online. The books spun off into The It Girl boarding school series, the Upper East Side reboot Gossip Girl: The Carlyles, a graphic novel line, and the slasher remix Gossip Girl, Psycho Killer.
Von Ziegesar has also written outside the core teen universe. Cum Laude takes her eye for class and status to a small liberal arts college in Maine. Dark Horses pairs a self-destructive girl with a dangerous racehorse in a story about grief, addiction, and competition. Cobble Hill shifts to adult neighbors in Brooklyn, following four households over one eventful year of marriages, parenting, and midlife drift.
Across all of these books, certain threads repeat: expensive settings that are fun to peek into, characters who are both awful and oddly endearing, and a steady sense that gossip is really a way of asking who belongs and who does not. Her writing keeps the tone light, but the questions under it are often serious.
Today von Ziegesar lives in Brooklyn with her husband, Richard Griggs, and their two children. She still writes about New York, but from a different angle, drawing on school runs, neighborhood parks, and the less polished side of city life. The world of Gossip Girl made her name, yet she continues to nudge her stories toward new corners of the city she knows best.
