Author bio
CD Reiss was born in New York City and grew up there before heading west for school. She later moved to Los Angeles for graduate study in screenwriting at USC, and that mix of East Coast edge and LA glamour still runs through a lot of her fiction.
Screenwriting was the first plan.
It did not turn into the career she expected, but it clearly left a mark on how she builds a story. Her books tend to move fast, land scenes cleanly, and keep pressure on the characters from the first chapter forward. Even when the romance is intense, there is usually a strong sense of structure underneath it.
Then novels took over.
A lot of readers found her through Songs of Submission, the serial-turned-series about musician Monica Faulkner and billionaire Jonathan Drazen. Those books gave Reiss a breakout hit and opened the door to the larger Drazen universe, where side characters and family connections keep leading into new stories. If you move from Beg to Ruin to Secret Sins, you can feel how much she likes building one messy, interconnected world.
She is not a one-lane writer, though. Marriage Games turns a collapsing marriage into an intense power struggle. King of Code brings tech wealth and humiliation into a small-town setting. Shuttergirl and Lead Me Back use Hollywood as more than shiny scenery, they make it part of the emotional problem. And books like Mafia Bride show how comfortable she is writing danger, obsession, and loyalty when the stakes get criminal.
She likes messy people.
Across the catalog, a few things come up again and again: power, consent, family loyalty, money, image, revenge, and characters who are smart enough to understand the risks but step forward anyway. Los Angeles shows up often. So do wealthy families, public lives, criminals in tailored suits, and women who refuse to stay ornamental.
Her success also carried over into audio. The audiobook of Marriage Games won an Audie Award, and her work has regularly appeared on bestseller lists. Still, the appeal of Reiss is less about polish for its own sake and more about how personal her books can feel, even when the setup is huge, a mafia king, a movie star, a billionaire, or a dominant who scares everyone in the room except the woman looking right back at him.
Reliable author notes place her in California now. That fits. Her books often feel rooted in places where glamour, ambition, and danger can sit at the same table, and nobody has to pretend that love is ever the simple part.
