Going Underground

by Gerard Way

2017

Grieving the death of his wife and drifting through office life, legendary spelunker Cave Carson is jolted back into adventure when his cybernetic eye starts showing terrifying visions. With his daughter Chloe, he descends toward the underground city of Muldroog and a conspiracy tied to his old employer.

Series background & context

Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye revives an obscure Silver Age adventurer and drops him into a very modern story about grief, family, and how hard it is to retire from a life of secrets. Cave, once a celebrated underground explorer, has traded the cockpit of his tunneling vehicle for middle‑management at a mining corporation. He’s also a recent widower, struggling to process the death of his wife Eileen while trying to stay present for their college‑age daughter, Chloe.

The twist, flagged in the title, is that Cave has a mysterious cybernetic eye. It doesn’t just replace lost tissue; it feeds him hallucinations and visions that blur the line between memory, guilt, and something more sinister. When a stranger from Eileen’s hidden past shows up at his secret underground lab, Cave is dragged back into the world of deep‑earth civilizations, dangerous cults, and the kind of pulp‑sci‑fi threats he thought he’d left behind.

Volume one, collected as Going Underground, sends Cave, Chloe, and an old friend back beneath the surface to the subterranean city of Muldroog. What begins as a rescue mission quickly reveals a conspiracy tied to Cave’s corporate employer, EBX, and to whatever intelligence is living inside his prosthetic eye. The further they travel, the more the book leans into trippy visuals—glowing fungi, impossible caverns, grotesque monsters—while still grounding the story in a father and daughter who are learning who they are without Eileen.

Cave himself is a different kind of middle‑aged hero. He’s not stoic so much as numb, alternately clinging to routine and diving headfirst into danger because that’s where he used to feel most alive. Chloe, by contrast, is unimpressed by her dad’s legend but fiercely protective of him once she realizes how lost he really is. Their dynamic—half road‑trip bickering, half fumbling reconciliation—keeps the book human even when a hallucinating eye is vomiting up surreal flashbacks.

Like the rest of Young Animal, the series mashes up tones: there’s noir‑ish dread at the corporate offices, B‑movie adventure in the caverns, and a streak of absurd comedy running through everything. Side characters and cameos from the wider DC universe drop in, but Cave’s story stays fairly self‑contained. You don’t need decades of back issues to follow it; the point is that he has a long, messy history, and the comic shows what happens when it finally catches up with him.

For readers, Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye offers something a little different from standard superhero fare. It’s a grief story wrapped in sci‑fi spelunking, with a protagonist who’s as haunted by his own choices as he is by anything lurking in the dark below.
