Series background & context

Sam Blake's Cathy Connolly books are a Dublin set Garda trilogy that begins with Little Bones. At the center is Detective Garda Cathy, or Cat, Connolly, a young officer who is smart, brave, impulsive, and not always great at protecting herself. She is a kickboxing champion, fiercely committed to the job, and the kind of investigator who trusts her instincts even when that gets her into trouble.

She is easy to root for.

What gives the series its bite is that Cat never feels like a tidy, all-purpose crime heroine. In the first book she is already carrying a lot in her personal life, and that pressure does not magically disappear once the case starts. Across the trilogy, her work keeps colliding with questions about family, loyalty, ambition, and what kind of future she can build outside the job. Her bond with senior officer Dawson O'Rourke, part mentor, part emotional complication, becomes one of the threads that quietly holds the books together.

That thread is worth following.

Each novel has its own investigation, but all three share the same grounded, modern feel. Little Bones opens with baby bones hidden in the hem of a wedding dress. In Deep Water turns personal when Cat's friend disappears. No Turning Back begins with a deliberate hit-and-run and another suspicious death close by. The crimes reach into family secrets, missing persons work, organized crime, and the darker corners of life online, but the stories never drift too far from the people caught in the middle.

Dublin and its surrounding suburbs matter here. Blake uses Garda stations, hospitals, parks, family homes, colleges, and coastal roads to make the setting feel lived in and specific. The police work is practical and pressured. Interviews go wrong. Leads dry up. Personal baggage walks into the room with the detectives. That keeps the books readable and tense, even when the cases become more complex.

These are fast crime novels, but they are not cold. Cat carries physical and emotional scars, and the series keeps asking what the job costs the people who do it. There is danger, procedural legwork, and plenty of momentum, but also friendship, bad timing, family strain, and the constant effort to do the right thing before the next decision lands. The cases stand alone, but Cat's life changes enough from book to book that this is a trilogy best read in order, starting with Little Bones.
