Author bio
Catherine Mann has spent years writing love stories with motion in them. Sometimes that motion comes from military danger, sometimes from family drama, and sometimes from a dog, a ranch, or a stubborn billionaire who needs his life turned upside down.
She is a South Carolinian at heart.
Before writing full time, Mann studied theater, earning a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the College of Charleston and a master's degree in theater from UNC Greensboro. She later worked as a theater school director and taught at the university level, which makes a lot of sense once you read her fiction. Her books are packed with sharp entrances, strong emotional beats, and characters who know how to fill a room.
Writing seems to have grown alongside real life. After years of moving around the country and raising a family, she built a career across romance, romantic suspense, and, more recently, women's fiction. That range is one of the appealing things about her work. You can pick up a military romance like Cover Me or Under Fire for action and high stakes, then turn to a warmer, heart-first book like Shelter Me and find the same steady interest in people trying to take care of each other.
She can write danger, but she also knows how to write home.
A lot of Mann's best-known books mix pressure with tenderness. Taking Cover won a RITA Award, and readers often point to her military series for the way they balance suspense, teamwork, and heat. Books like Hot Zone, Protector, and Free Fall lean into rescue missions, covert work, and impossible choices. Her contemporary romances, especially the Harlequin titles, often work in a different key, with surprise babies, fake engagements, wounded families, and second chances that feel messy before they feel earned.
Animals matter in her books, too. Shelter Me and Rescue Me bring that front and center, folding rescue work and therapy dogs into stories about grief, recovery, and trust. Even when the setup is classic category romance, Mann usually gives the characters something real to carry. That extra weight is part of why her books are such easy page-turners. They move fast, but they do not feel empty.
In recent years, she has also moved further into Southern women's fiction with books like Lightning in a Mason Jar and The Sweet Tea Odyssey. Those novels keep her emotional directness while widening the lens to family history, friendship, resilience, and the long aftereffects of secrets.
Her work has earned a RITA Award, a Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award, a Bookseller's Best Award, and multiple RITA finals. She has also been a frequent speaker for libraries, universities, book clubs, and writing groups.
These days, Mann lives back in South Carolina with her Harley-riding husband. They are empty nesters with a large blended family, grandchildren, dogs, and a few feral cats in the mix. Animal rescue is an important part of her life, and that caring streak shows up again and again in her fiction.
