Author bio
Cassie Alexander is a registered nurse who built a fiction career around long shifts, hard cases, and a sharp taste for monsters.
Writing seems to have been there from the start. She has said she always wanted to write, but she also wanted work that would reliably pay the bills and leave room for books. Nursing turned out to be the practical answer, especially in the Bay Area, where she has lived for years. The job was demanding, human, and full of high-stakes moments, and all of that would later show up in her fiction.
She worked nights, and that rhythm runs straight through her books.
Her debut novel, Nightshifted, was published in 2012 and introduced Edie Spence, a nurse on a hidden hospital ward for supernatural patients. Readers who fall for that series usually respond to the same things: the medical detail feels lived in, the danger arrives fast, and Edie sounds like an actual tired person trying to survive a bad shift, not a fantasy action figure in scrubs.
That nurse's-eye view became one of Alexander's signatures. In Moonshifted and Shapeshifted, the paranormal chaos gets bigger, but the ordinary pressures still matter. Work matters. Family trouble matters. Money matters. The books understand that saving someone can feel brave, gross, heartbreaking, and routine, sometimes all in the same hour.
She does not stay in one lane for long.
Alongside urban fantasy, Alexander has written a wide range of paranormal and monster romance, sometimes on her own and sometimes with Kara Lockharte. Dragon Called opens one side of her work, with a night nurse pulled into the orbit of a dragon prince. Bend Her shows another, with dark fantasy, captivity, and Beauty and the Beast tension. AITA? goes funnier and sapphic. Rough Ghost Lover takes a much darker turn. Across all of them, she keeps returning to dangerous intimacy, power imbalances, and characters who want connection even when every warning light says to run.
Her nonfiction book, Year of the Nurse, was published under the name Cassandra Alexander and came out of her experience as an ICU nurse during the Covid-19 pandemic. The memoir is blunt, angry, exhausted, and very personal, and it helps explain why the emotional pressure in her fiction lands the way it does. Even in the wildest setup, her books tend to know what fear feels like in the body.
Bodies matter a lot in her stories. Blood, illness, appetite, transformation, fatigue, touch, recovery. Even when she is writing dragons, vampires, ghosts, or impossible creatures, the stakes stay close to the skin. People want safety. People want relief. People want to be chosen.
These days, she lives in the Bay Area with her husband, two cats, and a lot of succulents. She is also part of the shared pen name Cassie Lockharte, created with Kara Lockharte.
The through line is pretty simple. Alexander writes fast, high-pressure stories where danger and desire sit in the same room, and where even the strangest worlds still leave space for work, grief, family mess, and the hope that someone might make it through the night.
