Author bio

Caroline Hanson grew up in California, then spent a big stretch of her youth in London, where she has said she went to dance and spend time in pubs. That mix, California daylight and London grit, feels close to the mood of her books: romantic, funny, a little dangerous, and happy to blur the line between everyday life and the supernatural.

She was reading about vampires long before she started writing them.

As a teenager, two of the writers she loved most were Anne Rice and Jude Deveraux, which says a lot about where her fiction ended up. One side is dark fantasy and bloodlust. The other is sweeping romance, yearning, and big emotional choices. Hanson has also named writers like Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Lisa Kleypas, Loretta Chase, Nalini Singh, and J.R. Ward among the authors she enjoys.

Before publishing novels, she lived a life that did not look especially neat on paper. She moved back to the United States, married an Englishman, passed the bar, and had two children. Her author bios also mention tennis, along with a joke that she works hard to keep rumors of constant cleaning and cooking away from her family. That gives you a pretty good sense of her voice.

Writing seems to have grown naturally out of those longtime interests. She made her fiction debut in 2011 with Love is Darkness, then quickly followed it with Love is Fear and Love Is Mortal. Those Valerie Dearborn books mix vampires, empaths, fey politics, and an emotionally messy love triangle, but the real hook is Valerie herself, who wants an ordinary life and never quite gets one.

Ordinary is not a word Hanson trusts for long.

Her range became clearer in the books that followed. Bewitching the Werewolf and Betwixt a Wolf and a Hard Place lean lighter and funnier, with witches, werewolves, and a lot of attitude. A Lady Out of Time and A Lady Most Dangerous move into time travel and Victorian adventure, following a future soldier dropped into the nineteenth century. Then the Rebecca Finner books, including Forgotten, Remembered, Blood and Infinity, and Coveted by the Infinite, turn darker, building a closed vampire society that feels more claustrophobic and unsettling.

Across all of those series, a few things keep coming back. Hanson likes heroines who are smart, tired, stubborn, and not especially interested in being told what role they should play. She likes powerful men too, but rarely the easy version of them. Her stories often live in the gray area, where love, danger, loyalty, appetite, and power keep tangling together.

She also likes worlds with rules. Whether she is writing vampire courts, werewolf packs, or Victorian missions that can alter history, there is usually a system underneath the chaos, and a heroine trying to survive inside it without losing herself. That mix of paranormal heat, dry humor, and high-stakes romance is what tends to bring readers to her work.

Hanson has described herself as a mother, a lawyer, a reader, a writer, and a tennis player. That sounds like enough jobs for several people, which may help explain why her books move fast.
