Author bio
Carola Dunn was born in London and grew up in the village of Jordans in Buckinghamshire. She attended Friends' School, Saffron Walden, then studied Russian and French at the University of Manchester. That mix, English village roots and a strong curiosity about language and place, runs quietly through much of her fiction.
Before writing became her full-time work, she did all sorts of jobs. Over the years she worked in market research, child care, construction, and even wrote definitions for a science and technology dictionary. It is not the usual path into historical fiction, but it helps explain why her books often feel practical, observant, and refreshingly down to earth.
Then she started writing.
After university she traveled widely and got as far as Fiji before life changed direction. She returned, married, and settled in California, where she began writing seriously in the late 1970s. She sold her first Regency romance in 1979, and that early success led to a long run of traditional Regencies, beginning with Toblethorpe Manor.
Those romance novels were never all cut from the same cloth. Some are witty social comedies, some are adventure stories full of smugglers, kidnappings, and inheritance tangles, and some take surprising turns into time travel, political drama, or even ghostly territory. Books like Miss Hartwell's Dilemma, Black Sheep's Daughter, and Miss Jacobson's Journey show how comfortably she could move from drawing room comedy to real peril without losing the light touch that keeps the pages moving.
Mystery came next, partly because the publishing landscape shifted and partly because Dunn wanted new kinds of protagonists. When she launched the Daisy Dalrymple mysteries with Death at Wentwater Court in 1994, she found the series that many readers still know best. Daisy is an aristocratic young woman trying to make her own living as a writer in 1920s England, and that setup gives Dunn room to explore country houses, trains, villages, London flats, and changing social rules, all while keeping a murder puzzle at the center.
Daisy grows up, too.
Across books like The Winter Garden Mystery, Murder on the Flying Scotsman, and Heirs of the Body, Dunn lets the series move forward through marriage, family life, and a widening circle of recurring characters. Later she began the Cornish mysteries with Manna from Hades, shifting to 1960s Cornwall and an older lead, Eleanor Trewynn, a retired charity worker whose quiet village life keeps turning out to be anything but quiet.
Readers often seem to come back to Dunn for the company as much as the crimes. Her stories are filled with capable women, difficult relatives, decent but occasionally baffled men, and historical settings that feel carefully researched without ever feeling heavy. She has said that many readers think of Daisy as a friend, and that sounds exactly right.
Dunn has lived in Eugene, Oregon, since 1992, after many years in California. She has a grown son and grandchildren, and for years she was known to start the day walking her dog by the Willamette River. It is an appealingly ordinary detail, and a very fitting one for a writer whose books are so good at making everyday texture feel alive.
