Author bio

Carla Kovach was born in Birmingham in the United Kingdom and later settled in Redditch, Worcestershire, a part of the country that often finds its way into her fiction. She grew up drawn to eerie stories, crime dramas and anything with a hint of darkness.

As a teenager she was forever scribbling scenes in notebooks, but it was discovering local theatre that really pushed her toward writing. After working in accounts, she joined an amateur production, stepped on stage, and realised she loved the energy of rehearsals as much as the performances.

That theatre work soon led to writing plays of her own. She wrote scripts that were performed in venues close to home, including productions staged in Camden and at The Norbury Theatre in Droitwich Spa. For one show she even took the director’s chair herself, learning how stories change once actors begin to inhabit the roles.

From there, screenwriting felt like a natural next step. Kovach went on to write the script for the independent film Penny for the Guy, a dark story about a homeless man on Guy Fawkes night whose encounter with a stranger changes everything. The film, released in the UK in 2015, showed how comfortable she was working with tension, atmosphere and morally murky characters.

Around the same time she set herself a new challenge, to finish a novel. The result was Flame, a young adult ghost story about a lonely girl, a derelict house and a blue door that opens onto something dangerous. Self publishing that first book taught her the nuts and bolts of storytelling, revision and finding readers.

She followed it with To Let, a psychological thriller about a woman whose fresh start in a canal side apartment comes with a disturbing history, and Whispers Beneath the Pines, a crime thriller that sends a group of friends into the mountains of Turkey with disastrous results. A lighter side of her writing appears in Meet Me at Marmaris Castle, a romantic holiday novella that leans into awkward dates, second chances and travel mishaps.

In 2018 Kovach launched the work she is now best known for, the Detective Gina Harte crime series. Beginning with The Next Girl and continuing through books like Her Final Hour, Her Pretty Bones and The Liar's House, the novels follow a determined detective inspector working major crimes in a fictional Midlands town. The cases often revolve around missing women, buried family secrets and the long shadow of domestic abuse.

Alongside Gina Harte, she continues to write stand alone psychological thrillers such as What She Did, Find Me, The Houseshare, On a Quiet Street and My Husband's Wife. These books step away from the police station and focus on ordinary people whose lives crack open when the past refuses to stay hidden.

Today Kovach still lives in Worcestershire, balancing drafting, edits and research with family life and appearances at libraries and festivals. When she talks about her work she often comes back to small fears, the feeling of walking home alone at night or closing your front door and wondering what you have missed. Those everyday anxieties, filtered through her love of crime and horror, are what give her stories their uneasy, human edge.
