Carl Vonderau Books in Order

Carl Vonderau grew up in Cleveland and loved writing when he was young, but books had to wait their turn. He headed west for school, studied at Stanford, spent a year traveling and taking classes in Latin America, and also studied music at San Jose State before finishing a degree in economics.

It was not a straight line into publishing.

Instead of building a writing career right away, he went into banking, the field that paid the bills and took him around the world. He lived and worked in the United States, Latin America, Canada, and North Africa, became a dual U.S. and Canadian citizen, and gathered the kind of insider knowledge most thriller writers have to invent. He has even joked that international life taught him how to put his foot in his mouth in Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

Writing never really left him, though. Vonderau has said he wrote for years while working, learning the craft slowly, taking classes, seeking feedback, and revising hard. After a long career in banking, he finally gave the thing he had loved since childhood the front seat and turned fully to fiction. He has described that path as a long apprenticeship, which fits the steady, workmanlike feel of his books.

His debut novel, Murderabilia, arrived in 2019 and quickly showed what kind of stories he likes to tell. On the surface, it is a dark thriller about a banker hiding the fact that his father was a notorious serial killer. Underneath, it is about family shame, buried history, and the fear that the past can still reach into a carefully built life. Readers tend to come for the premise and stay for the emotional pressure beneath it.

His second novel, Saving Myles, published in 2023, moves from inherited guilt to parental panic. It follows a La Jolla banker whose troubled teenage son is kidnapped after crossing into Tijuana, and the story forces its characters into painful bargains, dirty money, and impossible choices. The suspense moves fast, but the novel stays focused on a family under strain, which is one of Vonderau's recurring strengths.

Family is the through line.

Again and again, his fiction returns to people who look stable on the outside and feel cornered on the inside. Money matters in his books, but not just as background. Banking, wealth, and financial pressure become ways of talking about secrecy, power, compromise, and the stories people tell to protect the people they love. He has also spoken about drawing on his religious upbringing, which helps explain why guilt, conscience, and private belief sit so close to danger in his work. The books have earned awards along the way, with Murderabilia winning Left Coast Crime and San Diego Book honors, and Saving Myles picking up awards from American BookFest, Pencraft, and National Indie Excellence.

Now he lives in San Diego with his wife, and his two grown sons are close by. There is something fitting about that, because his novels so often turn on the ties between parents and children. His road to publication took time, but it gave him a deep well to draw from: travel, business, faith, family life, and years spent watching how respectable people behave when the pressure is on.
