Spectacular

by Stephanie Garber

2024

Set after the Caraval trilogy, this illustrated holiday novella follows Scarlett, Tella, Julian, and Legend through a festive celebration in the Meridian Empire. Tella's search for the perfect gift turns into a magical, mischievous adventure.

Series background & context

At the center of Caraval are sisters Scarlett and Donatella Dragna, who have grown up under a cruel father on a tiny island and spent years dreaming about escape. Their chance arrives in the form of an invitation to Caraval, a legendary traveling spectacle run by the mysterious Legend. What looks like a game quickly becomes something far more unsettling. Tella vanishes, Scarlett is told to find her, and the series begins by asking the question it never fully lets go of: how much of this is performance, and how much is real?

That uncertainty is the real engine of the series.

The setting matters as much as the plot. Garber builds these books out of candlelit streets, private islands, velvet tents, hidden rooms, impossible dresses, enchanted cards, and cities that seem to change shape when no one is looking. The Meridian Empire feels theatrical on purpose. It is full of beauty, but it is also built on secrets, bargains, and power plays. Even quiet scenes carry the sense that the floor might shift under a character's feet.

The books also widen as they go. Caraval is mostly Scarlett's story, and it follows her careful, skeptical way of moving through danger. Legendary shifts the focus to Tella, who is bolder, messier, and willing to gamble more for the people she loves. By Finale, the scope is larger, the magic is older, and the stakes stretch beyond one contest. Questions about Legend, old debts, family history, and the unleashed Fates start pressing on everyone at once.

Even with all that magic, the heart of the series is surprisingly human. These books are about sisters who love each other fiercely, even when they lie to one another. They are about romance, but also about trust, identity, and the cost of wanting freedom. The tone is glamorous and dangerous at the same time. If you like fantasy that feels like a dream with sharp corners, this is very much that kind of read.

Then there is Spectacular, a later holiday novella set after the main trilogy, which brings Scarlett, Tella, Julian, and Legend back for a lighter adventure while keeping the series' taste for odd gifts, playful magic, and trouble hiding under pretty wrapping.
