Cara Reinard Books in Order

Cara Reinard writes domestic suspense about families under pressure, ordinary lives tilted off course, and secrets that do not stay buried. Her novels often begin with an intimate crisis, a missing person, a betrayal, a frightening choice, then follow the shock waves through a marriage, a neighborhood, or an entire family.

Western Pennsylvania is a lasting part of her fictional map. She graduated from the business school at Gannon University, later earned an MFA in Writing from Lindenwood University, and has drawn on the Pittsburgh area's landscape in her work. In Sweet Water, for example, Sewickley's old homes, wooded streets, and class divides aren't just background. They help shape the unease.

Reinard did not take a quick, tidy path into publishing. In 2009, while on maternity leave, she finished a domestic-suspense manuscript. She kept writing around a full-time sales career, using evenings, weekends, hotel rooms during work travel, and even a bedroom closet when quiet space was hard to find.

The first two books to reach readers were Pretty Dolls and Hand Grenades and Last Doll Standing, a connected story centered on Cecelia, or Cece, Laramie.

Her publishing journey had false starts. Reinard has described querying dozens of agents, working with several representatives, and having manuscripts fail to sell before finding a home for those first two novels with a smaller press. She later returned to the thriller she had written about a sister missing during a Long Island superstorm. That book was Into the Sound, although it would be bought after another manuscript, Sweet Water.

Sweet Water became a turning point. It follows Sarah Ellsworth after her teenage son is found beside the body of his girlfriend, forcing Sarah and her husband to confront the price of protecting a child. The book grew from a shorter story and made especially strong use of the Sewickley setting Reinard knew well.

The books that followed show the range within her preferred territory. Into the Sound is built around sisters Holly and Vivian, a hurricane, and the damage left by a difficult childhood. The Den puts four adult siblings in the orbit of an inheritance and a dangerous family rivalry. Later novels such as The Wife at the Window, The Clinic, and Never Come Back continue to explore parenthood, marriage, memory, jealousy, and the lies people tell when they are afraid of losing the people they love.

Her stories tend to keep the focus close to home. A beautiful house can hold old history. A partner may know less than they think. A parent facing an impossible choice may discover that every answer comes with a cost.

Away from the page, Reinard works in the pharmaceutical industry and lives north of Pittsburgh with her husband, children, and Bernese mountain dogs. She is also a screenwriter.
