Safe Haven

by Red Phoenix

2018

After a devastating loss, Candy explores submission and finds herself falling for Captain, a decorated war hero with deep guilt and deeper restraint. He wants her, but he is determined to protect her instead of claiming her.

Series background & context

The Captain's Duet is one of Red Phoenix's more focused, emotional romances. Instead of following a big group over many books, it locks in on two people, Candy and Captain, and lets their connection carry almost everything. That gives the story a tighter feel, but not a lighter one. These books are full of longing, restraint, guilt, and the kind of love that hurts before it heals.

Candy is young, wounded, and trying to move forward after heartbreak. Her path leads her into the orbit of the Submissive Training Center, where she meets Captain, a decorated officer and dominant who has his own scars, both visible and hidden. He is steady, honorable, and deeply protective. He is also convinced he should not claim the woman he wants.

That refusal becomes the engine of the duet.

In Safe Haven, the pull between them is immediate, but Captain's guilt and sense of duty keep getting in the way. He sees himself as protector first, partner second, and that makes every tender moment feel complicated. Destined to Dominate keeps building on that tension. The question is no longer whether they care for each other. It is whether love can survive the weight of trauma, outside judgment, and the limits Captain thinks he has to accept.

Because there are only two books, the emotional pacing is direct. The duet does not wander. It stays close to the wounds both characters are carrying and the life they might be able to build if they stop treating love like a threat. Readers who enjoy damaged heroes, protective dominants, and romances built on patience rather than instant rescue will probably click with this one.

It also sits comfortably inside the wider Brie universe, so fans of that world will recognize the atmosphere and some of the values at work. But the heart of the series is private. This is not a sprawling ensemble piece. It is a two-person story about safety, surrender, and whether two scarred people can believe they are allowed to keep each other.
