Series background & context
The Capitol Theatre series is Kleypas’s love letter to the world backstage. Set in Regency‑era London, it centres on a famous playhouse where actors, playwrights, aristocrats and scandal‑hungry audiences collide. The result is a pair of novels—and a connected Christmas novella—that mix stage glamour with very real questions about identity and respectability.
In Somewhere I’ll Find You, Julia Hargate was married by proxy as a child to Damon, Marquess of Savage, in an arrangement meant purely to save his family’s finances. She promptly ran away, reinventing herself as Mrs. Jessica Wentworth, the most celebrated actress in London. Years later, Damon decides it’s time to free himself from a marriage he never chose—only to discover that the woman he wants as his mistress is, in fact, his long‑lost wife.
Because You’re Mine shifts focus to Logan Scott, the brilliant, guarded actor‑manager who runs the Capitol Theatre. Lady Madeline Matthews is being pushed into marriage with an older, lecherous lord and sees ruin as her only escape. Determined to destroy her own value on the marriage market, she sets out to seduce Logan instead. Her plan is naïve, his resistance is fierce, and the resulting relationship forces both of them to reevaluate what they owe themselves and each other.
The novella I Will is connected to this world through side characters. Andrew, Lord Drake, has been cut from his father’s will because of his wild behaviour; to win back his inheritance he convinces bluestocking Caroline Hargreaves to pose as his reformed fiancée over Christmas. Their fake courtship begins as a transaction and slowly, messily, becomes something much more real.
Across the series, Kleypas contrasts the rigid hierarchies of titled society with the more fluid, risky world of the theatre, where talent and hard work can sometimes outrun birth. There are scenes of rehearsal chaos, backstage gossip and opening‑night nerves alongside ballroom encounters and drawing‑room confrontations. Readers who like actor heroes, capable heroines and stories about people inventing themselves on their own terms will find a lot to enjoy here.
