California Bones Books in Order

The California Bones trilogy takes place in an alternate California where magic is stored in the remains of extinct or legendary creatures. Osteomancers gain power by consuming bones, oils, and other pieces of magical animals. It is a useful talent, but it is also a brutal system, because powerful osteomancers can become a source of magic themselves.

The first book follows Daniel Blackland, a thief in a canal-crossed Los Angeles ruled by the Hierarch of Southern California. Daniel has spent years hiding under a false identity after seeing the Hierarch murder his father for the magic in his bones. When Daniel is pushed into a job to steal his father’s sword from the ruler’s storehouse, he has to call on old friends, including the nearly unkillable Moth, illusionist Jo Alverado, his ex Cassandra, and the mysterious Emma.

It is a heist story with teeth.

The setting matters as much as the job. This version of Southern California has familiar beaches, parks, markets, and neighborhoods, but the roads have given way to canals and the old landscape has been reshaped by magical power. The government is corrupt, the ruling class treats people as resources, and every shortcut carries a cost. Daniel knows how to lie, steal, and survive, but he also has to decide what responsibility looks like when he has the chance to strike back.

Pacific Fire shifts much of the focus to Sam, a young golem created from the defeated Hierarch’s magic. Sam wants an ordinary life, but he and Daniel are forced back toward Los Angeles when dangerous rivals begin assembling a Pacific firedrake, a magical weapon with the power to destroy entire neighborhoods. The series keeps its caper energy, while giving more space to questions of family, identity, and what a person is allowed to choose for themselves.

In Dragon Coast, Daniel faces an even more personal mission after Sam becomes trapped within the firedrake. The action moves north as Daniel attempts another high-risk theft in the kingdom of Northern California. By then, the trilogy has built a larger picture of rival territories, competing rulers, old grudges, and people who are trying to use magic without being consumed by it.

Expect fast-moving fantasy, criminal schemes, sharp banter, and plenty of danger. The books work best in publication order, starting with California Bones, because Daniel’s relationships and the consequences of each heist carry forward.
