Scar Tissue

by Judith Cutler

2004

Decorator Caffy Tyler looks through a window and sees the one thing nobody in her line of work wants to find, a dead body. That glimpse pulls her into a sharp Kent mystery full of danger and class tension.

Series background & context

Caffy Tyler is the lead in Scar Tissue, a single mystery rather than a long-running sequence, but she is memorable enough to deserve a page of her own. She is a Midlander living in Kent, practical, tough, and a little wary, the sort of woman who knows how to get on with a job even when life is not making things easy.

Her work matters to the shape of the story. Caffy is part of Paula's Pots, an all-women decorating team, which means she spends her days inside other people's houses. That is a smart setup for a crime novel. Decorators see a lot. They notice mess, taste, money, tension, and the things people forget to hide. In Scar Tissue, that everyday access turns dangerous when Caffy spots a dead body through a window and gets pulled into something far worse than a difficult day's work.

It starts with work, not detection.

That is part of what gives the book its appeal. Caffy is not a detective, not a police officer, and not a hobby sleuth with endless spare time. She is earning a living. The mystery grows out of that working life, and Cutler uses it well. There is a strong sense of class and space here, with Caffy moving between homes she is paid to improve and lives she does not entirely trust.

Kent is important too. It is a change from the Birmingham-heavy settings of some of Cutler's other books, and the shift suits Caffy. She feels slightly out of place, which makes her alert. She is tough, but not hard in a flat or showy way. There is vulnerability under the wit and common sense, and that keeps the story human.

If you are coming to this page expecting a long shelf of Caffy Tyler novels, you will not find one. What you will find is a strong standalone crime story with a grounded heroine, a believable working world, and a mystery that grows out of ordinary labour rather than grand theatrics.

Sometimes one book is enough to make a character stick. Caffy Tyler is that kind of case.
