Series background & context

A Café in Tuscany follows Francesca Romano, known as Frannie, as she tries to rebuild her life through baking and instead finds herself investigating murders. Fiona Grace gives the series a small Italian village, a family connection, and a bakery whose role in community life keeps bringing its owner close to trouble. The continuing story combines a fresh start with the discovery that an attractive new setting can contain old grievances and people with reasons to hide what they know.

In Biscotti Betrayal, Frannie's New Jersey cookie business has failed. Moving to Tuscany lets her reconnect with her Italian grandmother and improve her skills, giving her both practical work and a personal reason to hope the change will succeed. She expects recipes and family stories to occupy her attention. When a judge at the village wine festival dies after tasting her biscotti, the same baking that was supposed to create a future makes her a suspect. Clearing her name becomes necessary if the new life is to continue at all.

Her place in the village depends on more than producing good cookies.

The bakery provides a natural meeting point for people with different interests and histories. Festivals, familiar customers, and visiting guests bring Frannie into contact with a community that knows much more about itself than it initially shares with her. Being an outsider can make her vulnerable to suspicion, but it can also allow her to ask questions others have stopped asking. Her grandmother's presence links the move to an older family world, giving the story a source of belonging alongside the uncertainty of starting a business elsewhere.

Ricotta Revenge continues with secrets surrounding the village postman, while later titles bring further visitors and events into the bakery's orbit. The Pignoli Plagiarism, for example, uses a musician's arrival and a festival to connect a death with resentments rooted in the past. Food remains part of the setting rather than a separate decoration: the work gives Frannie reasons to attend events, serve people, and notice how their public behavior differs from what an investigation reveals. Each mystery develops within that continuing attempt to become part of village life.

Start with Biscotti Betrayal and continue in publication order to follow both Frannie's business and her growing familiarity with the people around it. Expect cozy mysteries with culinary details, family connections, and a heroine whose intended escape from disappointment creates an unexpected investigative role. The series' continuity comes from the bakery and its owner, while the cases expose different parts of the village. Frannie wants to make a living and find a home; solving a murder becomes another demand placed on that hopeful beginning.
