The Burgundy Club is Miranda Neville's bookish Regency series, built around a small society of obsessive collectors who care as much about editions, bindings, and auction catalogs as other people care about titles and dowries. That setup gives the books a different flavor right away. Instead of endless ballroom scenes, you get shops, libraries, sale rooms, and country houses full of people who can fall in love and argue about books at the same time.

The club itself is a men's world on the surface, but Neville never leaves it there. Her heroines push into that space with knowledge, nerve, and very little patience for male vanity. Juliana Merton, the bookseller in The Wild Marquis, knows the trade as well as any gentleman collector. Later books bring in women who are ambitious, practical, wounded, funny, or underestimated, and the men who think they have the upper hand usually learn otherwise.

What ties the series together is not one giant suspense plot so much as a shared obsession and a shared social circle. Characters chase rare volumes, compete at auction, hide secrets, and make very bad decisions around money and desire. Neville uses the world of collecting as more than decoration. Knowledge has cash value here. Taste can be a weapon. So can a reputation for being clever. The series also draws on real collecting culture, which helps the backdrop feel solid rather than gimmicky.

The romances themselves cover a nice range. There is the notorious rake who collides with an upstanding shopkeeper, the marriage-minded society woman undone by an inconveniently attractive viscount, the plain and penniless heroine who ends up on the road with a dandy who has lost his memory, and the politically serious woman pushed into marriage with a man she never meant to want. That variety keeps the books moving, even while the club remains a familiar thread in the background.

These are romances for people who like a little dust on the bindings.

The tone is witty, sensual, and slightly eccentric in the best way. There are kidnappings, scandals, prideful misunderstandings, and a fair amount of social comedy, but the books never forget that class, money, and respectability matter. Reading in order adds extra fun because the recurring collectors, friendships, and grudges keep circling back. It is still very much romance, but it also feels like spending time in a strange little hobbyist world that has suddenly turned glamorous, competitive, and dangerous.
