Buddy Steel is Michael Brandman's own lawman, and he arrives with less brooding than Jesse Stone and more California sun, sarcasm, and forward motion. The series begins with Buddy working homicide for the LAPD, smart, aggressive, and not especially eager to move backward in life. Then his father, legendary Sheriff Burton Steel, falls ill with Lou Gehrig's disease and asks him to come home to Freedom, a wealthy coastal town about a hundred miles north of Los Angeles. Buddy says yes, reluctantly, and that reluctant return shapes everything that follows.

Freedom matters here. It looks comfortable, polished, and protected, the kind of place where money buys privacy and public scandal is treated like bad manners. But Brandman keeps showing how quickly that surface cracks. Missing wives, murdered coaches, serial killings, cybercrime, cartel-linked violence, and rich people who assume rules are for someone else all find their way into Buddy's orbit. The books make good use of Southern California contrasts: beach estates and sheriff's offices, small-town routines and very modern criminal schemes.

At the center of it all is Buddy's voice.

He is irreverent, observant, and a little impatient with nonsense. He can be loyal one minute and needling the people around him the next. That gives the series a brisk, dry humor even when the cases turn dark. Buddy is not a cozy sleuth and he is not a polished bureaucrat. He is the kind of cop who pushes, improvises, and sometimes gets ahead of the official plan because standing still bothers him more than trouble does.

The ongoing story is also a family story. Buddy's return to Freedom forces him back into close quarters with a demanding father he both respects and resists. Across the series, that tension gives the books an emotional backbone. The cases matter, but so does the question of what Buddy owes home, what kind of lawman he wants to be, and whether he can build a life without simply becoming a younger version of Burton Steel.

Each book gives the series a slightly different lane. Missing Persons starts with a vanished woman connected to a famous television ministry and opens outward into corruption, drugs, and murder. One on One turns a school murder into a messy investigation of privilege, exploitation, and small-town rot. Wild Card pairs public beach access and a reclusive billionaire with a string of unnerving killings. Risk Factor brings in tech-savvy crime and home invasions. Death Threat widens the canvas again with cartel pressure and a rescue mission that turns personal.

If you like crime series that read fast, talk straight, and keep one foot in local politics and the other in action, Buddy Steel is easy to click with. Start with Missing Persons. Reading in order lets the relationships land better, especially Buddy's uneasy place in Freedom and the way his cases keep pulling him between duty, family, and the parts of Southern California most visitors never see.
