Broken Sky Books in Order

Broken Sky is one of Chris Wooding's earliest big swings, and it still feels distinctive. This is a fantasy series built with a lot of anime energy: fast-moving action, cliffhangers, strange powers, intense emotion, and a world that keeps getting larger the longer you stay in it. But underneath that style is a pretty classic story about young people losing their home, discovering the world is more complicated than they were told, and getting dragged into a war much bigger than themselves.

The heart of the story is a pair of twins, Ryushi and Kia. They have spent their lives on their father's remote wyvern stud, training hard but living a sheltered life. That ends when King Macaan's forces attack and destroy everything they know. The twins flee with a girl named Elani, and from that point on the series becomes a chain of escapes, revelations, battles, and hard choices that keep forcing them to grow up fast.

What makes the setting stand out is the idea of two linked worlds, the Dominions and Kirin Taq. As Ryushi and Kia learn more, the story opens into parallel histories, secret crossings, resistance movements, and the uneasy sense that the sky itself may once have been broken apart. There are spirit stones, Resonants who can move between worlds, wyverns, masked enemies, and rulers whose power depends on fear and control.

It is a lot, in a good way.

The villains matter too. King Macaan and Princess Aurin are not just background threats. Their reach shapes the whole series, and much of the tension comes from how thoroughly their rule has twisted the lives of the people beneath them. What starts as simple survival turns into rebellion, and then into something even broader as the twins move closer to the center of events.

One useful thing to know is that Broken Sky first appeared in short serialized parts before later being collected into larger volumes. You can feel that in the rhythm. The books are designed to pull you forward. Endings hit hard, reveals come quickly, and the cast is always being shoved into the next disaster. If you like fantasy that moves with urgency, that structure is a big part of the fun.

Across the whole series, expect high stakes, big feelings, and a strong sense of momentum. Wooding was clearly interested in mixing Western fantasy with the kind of long-arc storytelling he loved elsewhere, and the result has its own flavor. It is a coming-of-age saga, a war story, and a parallel-world adventure all at once. If you want something ambitious, a little wild, and easy to binge in order, Broken Sky delivers that very well.
