Author bio

Britney King is a Texas-based writer of psychological thrillers who has been publishing since 2013. Her stories usually begin with an ordinary-looking life, a marriage, a neighborhood, a job, a carefully managed home, then start pulling at the loose threads.

She lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband, children, two dogs, and a cat. Her public author bio has also made room for a joking reference to a partridge in a pear tree, which gives a fair sense of the playful edge behind the dark subject matter.

King's first novel was Bedrock, the opening book in a three-part story about Addison Greyer, a married mother whose dangerous choices pull her into a complicated relationship with William Hartman. The series established several things that show up again and again in her work: desire with consequences, people who keep secrets from those closest to them, and characters who make a bad decision, then make another trying to fix the first.

Her early books also include the With You novels, beginning with Somewhere With You. Those books follow Jack Harrison and Amelie Rose from their childhood friendship at a bereavement camp into an adult relationship shaped by travel, distance, grief, and poor timing. They are more romantic than much of her later work, but the emotional pressure is already there.

Nothing stays simple for long in a Britney King novel.

As her bibliography grew, King leaned further into domestic suspense and psychological games. Water Under the Bridge introduces Kate and Jude, a married couple whose suburban cover conceals a violent private life. The Social Affair follows a young woman who becomes obsessed with the polished online life of a couple she meets at work. HER turns a neighborly rivalry into a much darker question about jealousy and danger.

The person watching may be the person in the most danger.

King has also written a run of standalones built around close quarters and unstable trust. In Room 553, an affair draws a doctor into a hotel-room mystery. The Book Doctor looks at a struggling writer whose hunger for success takes a dangerous turn. Fever Dream moves to a Texas asylum in 1962, while The Sickness traps frightened passengers aboard a cruise ship during the first months of a pandemic.

Her later work keeps returning to control, obsession, revenge, and the gap between the version of life people display and what is happening behind closed doors. The After Hours books turn a promising corporate job into a trap. The Killer books follow women trying to juggle family life with lethal secrets. Across more than thirty thrillers, King has kept finding new ways to make a neat home, a workplace, a marriage, or a trip away feel like the least safe place to be.

Readers who like morally messy characters will find plenty to work with here. King's protagonists are not always easy to defend, and the people around them are often hiding something too. That tension, between what someone wants, what they will admit, and what they are willing to do, is the engine behind much of her work.
