Brinda Rose Humorous Mystery Books in Order

That is the setup for 90 Days to Score, and it tells you a lot about the tone of the series. This is a humorous mystery, but the pressure on Brinda is real. She is an outsider in a world of owners, investors, coaches, fixers, and polished social operators who know exactly how the game is played. She has money on paper, but almost no reason to trust the people around her. To keep control of the team and stay out of prison, she has to figure out who is lying, who is scheming, and who wants her out of the way for good.

The football setting is not just decorative. Coonts treats pro football as a business empire, a civic obsession, and a social battleground all at once. Every decision touches image, legacy, cash, and status. That gives the story a fun mix of big-money stakes and very personal tension. A boardroom can be as dangerous as a dark alley, and a society lunch can turn into open warfare if the right wife starts smiling too sweetly. Dallas matters here because the city takes the team seriously, and because Brinda's outsider status never stops being part of the story.

She also has help, sort of. Lucky O'Toole readers will recognize Paxton Dane, who arrives as reinforcement and creates a nice bridge between Coonts's Vegas books and this new corner of her fiction. Brinda still has to do the hard part herself, though. She has to size up her former father-in-law, deal with players and power brokers who assume she will fail, and cope with signs that the neat version of events around her husband's death may not be the truth at all.

What makes Brinda work is that she is not pretending to be unshakable. She is scared, angry, funny, and stubborn, often all at once. She notices social games, calls nonsense when she sees it, and keeps moving even when she has no clear playbook. That gives the mystery a brisk, conversational feel without lowering the stakes. Someone wants Brinda pushed aside, and the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous her position becomes.

If you like fish-out-of-water mysteries, 90 Days to Score is a strong entry point. Expect murder, football politics, social maneuvering, and an outsider heroine learning very fast that in Dallas, loyalty and performance can look an awful lot alike. It is lighter on the surface than a straight thriller, but underneath it is still a story about money, power, and survival.
