Author bio
Brian O'Sullivan grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, went to high school locally, and later attended UC Santa Barbara. Northern California has stayed close to his work. It supplies the familiar streets and social atmosphere behind several of his thrillers, especially the earlier Frankie and Evie books.
His route to publishing was anything but straight. After college, he found that the usual nine-to-five path didn't suit him, so he spent nearly a decade playing poker professionally. It was a life built around risk, patience, bluffing, and reading people, all things that fit rather neatly with a future in suspense fiction.
Eventually, he decided he didn't want to spend the rest of his working life at a card table.
O'Sullivan moved to Los Angeles and began writing screenplays. Hollywood appealed to him, but his scripts did not land with the people who could get them made. Rather than give up writing, he changed the form. He began working on novels, where he could control the pace, the cast, and the ending without waiting for a green light.
His first published novel, The Puppeteer, arrived in 2017. It introduced Frankie and Evie in a thriller shaped by murder, public attention, and the heated political atmosphere of the time. The follow-up, The Patsy, moves into conspiracy territory, as Frankie and Evie are caught up in a dangerous plan involving a dying billionaire, political targets, and a young marksman who may not be willing to play his assigned role.
Then came a change of scene. The Bartender is a Los Angeles crime thriller about Olive, a bartender drawn toward a charming stranger, and Becca, a grifter with a plan to steal a large stash of cash. The book follows several viewpoints, letting readers watch a con take shape from inside the heads of both its targets and its architects.
O'Sullivan's longest run is the Quint Adler series. Quint begins as a crime reporter in Revenge at Sea, then develops into a private investigator who takes on cold cases, serial killers, disappearances, and Hollywood murders. The books move from the Bay Area to Los Angeles and Las Vegas, while keeping Quint at the center of cases that tend to become much more personal and dangerous than expected.
He also created Bobby McGowan, an unofficial investigator whose cases begin with old evidence. In The Photo Album, Bobby reopens the murder of his mother after finding a clue among her belongings. The Other Annie and The Video Tape continue that interest in long-buried crimes, missing people, and the trouble that comes from asking questions nobody wants answered.
The stories are built for readers who like quick setups, multiple suspects, and ordinary people making one risky choice too many.
O'Sullivan has continued to write standalones alongside his series, including The Mastermind, Debut Novel, and CLUSTERFCK*. His books often return to con artists, would-be killers, investigators, witnesses, and people who think they can keep a secret under pressure. He has lived in both the Bay Area and Los Angeles, two places that continue to give his crime stories their backdrop.
