Author bio
Brian Garfield was born in New York City on January 26, 1939, but he grew up in Arizona, and that landscape stayed with him for life. He attended Southern Arizona School for Boys in Tucson and later earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in English from the University of Arizona.
He got started early.
Garfield wrote the novel that became his first published book while he was still a teenager, and Range Justice appeared in 1960. Before writing took over completely, he also spent time playing guitar with a band called the Palisades, and he served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve from 1957 to 1965.
That mix of youth, discipline, and range gave his work a particular feel. Even when he was writing fast-moving pulp, the books usually had a strong sense of how people work, how institutions fail, and how violence changes the room once it arrives.
He was astonishingly productive. Garfield wrote more than seventy books across westerns, suspense, espionage, history, and nonfiction, and by the end of the 1960s he had already built a huge body of work. Readers who find him through Death Wish sometimes miss how much of his foundation was laid in Arizona westerns, where cattle drives, mining towns, lawmen, and hard country taught him how to keep a story moving under pressure.
He never stayed in one lane for long.
His best-known novel, Death Wish, follows Paul Benjamin, an ordinary New Yorker shattered by a brutal crime against his family, and Garfield later wrote Death Sentence as a continuation that pushed even harder against the fantasy of revenge. He was fascinated by moral stress. Again and again, his books ask what happens when decent order breaks down and a person decides to answer fear with force.
But he could be funny, too. Hopscotch, the spy novel that won the Edgar Award for Best Novel, lets retired CIA operative Miles Kendig turn his own memoir into a running game against the agency that wants him quiet. In books like Relentless and The Threepersons Hunt, Garfield brought that same sharp control to the Southwest, mixing procedural chase plots with landscape, cultural tension, and a clear eye for how power moves through a community.
His nonfiction mattered as well. The Thousand-Mile War: World War II in Alaska and the Aleutians was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history, and it remains one of the books most often linked to his range as a writer. Much later, The Meinertzhagen Mystery showed the same skeptical streak in another form, as Garfield took apart the legend of British soldier and naturalist Richard Meinertzhagen and treated biography almost like detective work.
Hollywood kept finding him, even when the results were uneven. Nineteen of his books were adapted for film or television, and he wrote the screenplay for the film version of Hopscotch. He also served as president of both Mystery Writers of America and Western Writers of America, which says something simple but useful about his career: he belonged comfortably in more than one tradition.
Later in life, Garfield and his wife Bina divided their time between Pasadena, California, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. He died in Pasadena on December 29, 2018, from complications of Parkinson's disease. What lasts on the page is his range, western action, spy games, history, and a clean, driving sense of story that rarely wastes a sentence.
