Boyd Morrison is an American thriller writer whose career began in engineering rather than publishing. He worked on a NASA project, earned a doctorate in industrial engineering at Virginia Tech, and later worked for Thomson-RCA and Microsoft's Xbox Games Group. That background gives him a practical interest in how things work, an interest that also shapes novels in which a technical problem can be as urgent as a pursuit or a fight.

Writing became a serious possibility while he was in graduate school.

Morrison had enjoyed reading thrillers without assuming he could make a living from them. His wife encouraged him to take a science fiction writing course taught by Nancy Kress, and he began trying fiction of his own. The route to publication took years. He wrote an early novel, approached agents, and continued developing new books while the engineering career supplied a more predictable livelihood.

He and his wife made an agreement that he would support her through medical training, then have a chance to write full time. In 2005, after she became an attending physician, he left his Xbox job. Rejections followed, but he kept writing. His experience gives his account of becoming a novelist a particularly practical quality: finishing a book was a step forward, even when that manuscript did not immediately find a publisher.

The Ark brought the breakthrough. After publishers declined it, Morrison released his novels as ebooks in 2009 and found readers directly. Their response helped secure a publishing deal. The novel introduces Tyler Locke, a former combat engineer drawn into an archaeologist's search involving Noah's Ark, where an old mystery becomes a present threat. It established the mixture of history, scientific speculation, and urgent action that runs through the Tyler Locke books.

His stories often ask what might happen if a familiar legend hid something dangerous.

The Vault takes Locke toward the story of King Midas, with engineering puzzles and ancient material creating obstacles under severe time pressure. The standalone Rogue Wave turns to a different danger, a deadly tsunami heading for Hawaii. Both show Morrison's interest in giving a threat concrete workings: the characters must understand what is happening as well as find a way to survive it, with little time available to do either.

Collaboration has broadened his fiction. He wrote six Oregon Files adventures with Clive Cussler, including Piranha, joining the world of Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the Oregon. With his sister Beth, an art historian specialising in medieval manuscripts, he wrote The Lawless Land. That book takes adventure into fourteenth-century Europe, following a dispossessed knight through a landscape damaged by plague. The period changes, but the pursuit, hidden information, and danger retain the momentum familiar from his modern thrillers.

Morrison also became a Jeopardy! champion in 2003 and has worked as an actor in stage productions, commercials, and films. He is based in Seattle, and his writing now includes both contemporary adventures and the continuing historical series with Beth. Readers have several ways into his work, but the recurring attraction is a problem that demands action and thought together, set in a world where understanding the details may be essential to staying alive.
