Bowen & Baile Books in Order

This is a smaller series, but it tells you a lot about what Frank Roderus does well. Bowen & Baile takes the shape of a frontier detective story, yet it still feels like a western first, with dusty towns, long rides, and justice that depends more on the people chasing it than on any formal system.

At the center are Howard Bowen and Edward Baile. Bowen is the older hand, a man who used to hunt other men and would probably have preferred to leave that work behind. Baile is greener, younger, and eager enough to be dangerous if he were not also so sincere. Their partnership is the hook. Bowen knows the terrain and the cost of violence. Baile brings energy, nerve, and the feeling that he is still deciding what kind of man he wants to be.

That push and pull gives the books their personality.

The opening book, Bowen & Baile, starts with a hunt for five guilty men and a return to an old way of life Bowen thought he had put aside. Before I Die shifts the pair into detective work, with a missing-wife case that takes them through both polished and shabby parts of Colorado. Felicity keeps the same pattern, a straightforward job that grows more tangled once the partners start asking the right questions.

What you get across the series is not flashy sleuthing. It is legwork. Tracking. Reading people. Knowing when someone is frightened, lying, or both. These stories care about who deserves help and who has learned to hide behind respectability. That makes them feel close to classic private-eye fiction, but the western setting changes the rhythm. Travel takes time. Violence is personal. And if the wrong person decides he wants you gone, there may be nobody nearby to help.

The tone is brisk and unfussy. Roderus does not drown the books in mythology about the frontier. He keeps them close to the job at hand and the men doing it.

So if you want a Frank Roderus series with a strong duo at its center, this is a good one to pick. The books are short, direct, and easy to read in order. More than anything, they are about partnership, about a seasoned man and a newcomer learning how justice actually works when the world around them is rough, imperfect, and often armed.
