Author bio

Bob Blanton was born in Augsburg, Germany, to a U.S. soldier and a German national. His family returned to the United States when he was six months old, and his childhood was a restless one, with moves almost every year until he was fourteen. Before his father retired from the military, they had one longer stop in Colorado Springs. After that the family settled in Noble, Oklahoma, just south of Norman.

He went to the University of Oklahoma, then did what a lot of young graduates dream about and headed for the West Coast as soon as he could. For more than thirty years he lived in San Diego, working at Hewlett Packard as an engineer and later a manager. That long stretch in tech shows up all over his fiction, especially in the way he thinks through systems, logistics, and how new tools change ordinary life.

He was a reader long before he was a published writer.

Blanton has said that his mother first took him to the library when he was five, and the habit stuck. He toyed with writing after college, but work kept crowding it out. During long business trips to Asia and Europe, including stops in Singapore and India, he started building stories in his head, sometimes while trying to sleep on airplanes. The early version of his Stone books took shape that way.

Retirement changed the timetable. After leaving HP, he and his wife moved south to Mexico, where they live near the ocean. In that quieter setting, with fewer meetings and more sunsets, he finally had the time to finish and polish the novels he had been carrying around for years. The first three he completed became the core of the Stone series.

That series begins with Matthew and the Stone, followed by Stone Ranger and Stone Undercover. The books follow Matthew Brandt, a bright teenager who discovers a strange stone with unusual powers and then has to learn what it can do without wrecking his everyday life. Readers who like school-age heroes, hidden abilities, and mystery plots threaded through fantasy usually start here.

Then Blanton widened the lens.

With Starship Sakira, he kicked off the Delphi in Space books, which begin when Marc McCormack finds an alien ship and decides to use it to help Earth reach the stars. From there, titles like Delphi City, Delphi Station, and Delphi League grow into a long-running story about building cities, stations, alliances, and eventually whole political systems. A lot of readers come to Blanton for that mix of family loyalty, problem-solving, practical engineering, and a generally hopeful view of the future.

He also branched out into collaboration. Alongside Aybiline I. Dahlson, he worked on the Laim books, including Admiral’s Choice, Queen's Move, and Emperor’s Folly. Those novels lean more toward alien empires, survival, power struggles, and young women pushed into impossible situations. Even there, you can see the same interests that run through his solo work, capable people under pressure, new technology, and the way responsibility tends to arrive before anyone feels ready for it.

Across his books, Blanton returns again and again to people who have to build their way out of trouble.

That might mean a teenager learning how to use a dangerous gift, a family trying to turn one alien ship into a spacefaring civilization, or a heroine navigating the politics of empire after being thrown into a world she never chose. The settings change, but the engine is often the same. Someone finds a door, or a tool, or a power, and then has to figure out what kind of person to be on the other side of it.

Now he writes from a home near the water, and that feels like a good fit for the books themselves. They are full of forward motion, but they also have the patience of someone who spent years thinking through ideas before finally putting them on the page. If you start reading Bob Blanton, you will usually find clear premises, fast-moving plots, and a writer who likes to ask not just what is possible, but what it would take to make it work.
