The Blonde Identity

by Ally Carter

2023

A woman wakes up under the Eiffel Tower with no memory and killers on her trail. Told she is the twin of a rogue spy, she teams up with her sister’s grouchy ex-partner, posing as honeymooners on a frantic dash across Europe to survive and clear a name.

Series background & context

The Blonde Identity line marks Ally Carter’s move into full-length adult romantic comedies, while keeping the elements her readers already love: spies, fast plots, and banter that can turn on a dime from sharp to tender.

In The Blonde Identity, an unnamed woman wakes up in the middle of the night under the Eiffel Tower with no memory of who she is or why men with guns are chasing her. Her only ally is a gruff, extremely capable operative who calls her “Alex” and tells her to run. Very quickly, she learns two things: she is not Alex, and Alex is a rogue spy who happens to be her identical twin.

Everyone hunting them thinks she is the dangerous sister. The only way to survive is to team up with the man who used to be Alex’s partner, pose as newlyweds, and race across Europe while trying to untangle a conspiracy they barely understand. The tone is light and fizzy even when bullets are flying, leaning into road-trip shenanigans, fake-marriage tropes, and the awkwardness of falling for someone who keeps mixing you up with your twin.

The Blonde Who Came In from the Cold steps into the past of that spy world and focuses on two rival agents with a long, complicated history. Ten years ago they joined the CIA together. Five years ago they fell in love. Then something broke, and she walked away from both him and the job. The book opens with the pair waking up bloody, bruised, and handcuffed together in the dark, with no idea who captured them.

From there the story becomes a second-chance romance wrapped around a cat-and-mouse thriller. Old missions, half-kept promises, and secrets they never shared all come back to the surface while they dodge enemies and try to decide if they can trust each other again.

Although these books live in the same universe, each tells a complete story, so readers can start with whichever premise they like best. Compared with Carter’s YA novels, the Blonde Identity stories lean into adult language, heat, and humor, but they still share her trademark mix of action, heart, and heroines who are much harder to kill than they look.
