Series background & context

Blaze Dog Detective brings Lin Anderson's love of mystery to a younger audience.

The series is co written with Donald McKay and stars Blaze, a real border collie from Skye who becomes a fictional dog detective on the page. In the first book, The Magic Flag Mystery, the famous fairy flag of Clan MacLeod vanishes from a locked room in Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye. Local police call for Blaze because his scenting skills on the island are legendary, and he sets off with his human friends Rosa and Rory and his exuberant younger brother Laoch to track the stolen flag before it disappears from Skye forever.

The second adventure, The Dinosaur Mystery, opens when a prized dinosaur footprint is removed from the rocks at Staffin beach. Once again Blaze and his small team are called in, following scent trails across beaches, crofts and cliffs. Along the way they uncover a secret that suggests Skye's past, and present, are even more magical than the tourist brochures admit. Real locations such as the Fairy Glen and the island's dramatic coastline help young readers imagine exactly where the story is unfolding.

Blaze is the heart of the books, but he never works alone. Laoch brings younger sibling energy and bravery that sometimes tips into mischief. Rosa and Rory are bright, kind children who bridge the gap between the animal world and the adults, while Granny Beaton, arriving noisily on her motorbike with a crystal ball tucked away, adds humour and a light touch of the supernatural. Communication between dogs, birds and children gives the stories a warm, slightly magical feel without losing their footing in real island life.

In tone, the Blaze books are adventurous but gentle. There are stakes for the community when beloved objects such as the fairy flag or the fossil footprint are stolen, and there are moments of mild peril as the characters creep through tunnels, caves and castles or confront bumbling villains. However, the emphasis stays on teamwork, problem solving and courage rather than on fear. The writing is paced to keep confident readers turning the pages, but the stories also work well as read aloud mysteries for families.

The series quietly links back to Anderson's adult fiction too. Blaze first appeared helping Rhona MacLeod track a missing group on Skye in Time for the Dead, and here he finally gets to lead the investigation. His nose and instincts act as a canine version of forensic science, showing young readers how paying attention to small details can solve big problems.

For children who enjoy adventure stories with clues to follow and a strong sense of place, or for adults looking for something to share with dog loving kids, Blaze Dog Detective offers classic mystery fun in a very specific Skye setting.
