Series background & context

The Blackstone Chronicles follows the residents of a small New England town that grew up in the shadow of a massive stone asylum. Once a showpiece institution on the hill above Main Street, the asylum has been shuttered for years, its empty wards slowly rotting while locals argue over what should be built in its place.

At the center of the story is Oliver Metcalf, editor of the town newspaper and the son of the asylum’s last superintendent. When Blackstone finally moves to demolish the building and replace it with a gleaming new complex, Oliver is asked to help celebrate the town’s bright future. Instead he finds himself drawn back into unsettling childhood memories of locked doors, whispered experiments, and the sense that his father left dangerous work unfinished.

Each volume in the series zeroes in on one of Blackstone’s leading families—the McGuires, the Hartwicks, the Beckers, the Connallys, and others—who receive anonymous packages from an unknown benefactor. Inside each package is a gift linked to the asylum’s past: an antique doll, an elegant locket, a child’s toy, some seemingly harmless keepsake. The objects slide easily into their new homes, only to stir up jealousy, obsession, or outright violence.

On the surface, the town is wrestling with ordinary issues: funding for redevelopment, church politics, school rivalries, and small grudges that have simmered for decades. Underneath, those old hurts make the perfect soil for something malicious that still clings to the asylum. As the gifts circulate, accidents multiply, tempers flare, and neighbors who have known one another for years begin to suspect that the real danger might be coming from inside their tight little community.

Saul keeps the focus intimate, showing how each family’s secrets are tangled up with the institution on the hill. A bank president hides financial pressure behind a polished smile; a contractor cuts corners to save a future he thinks he deserves; parents try to shelter their children from stories about what really happened behind the asylum’s stone walls. The reader sees how easily one reckless decision made decades ago can echo across generations.

As the books progress toward the final volume, Asylum, the lines between personal tragedy and town history blur. Oliver is forced to confront what his father did in the name of treatment, what the town chose not to see, and how the echoes of that silence now move through the streets of Blackstone. The result is a compact, serialized horror saga that rewards reading the installments in order, watching the pattern emerge one cursed gift at a time.
